Late summer golf around Tampa

Do most (all?) of the courses in/around Tampa stay open during the summer, or do some shut down like Seminole?

There are probably 10 courses in the state that are seasonal.  1% maybe.

World Woods is great...though a bit of a drive from Tampa.

Paging Kyle Harris.  Pick up the white courtesy phone, please!

I'm pretty confident in saying many, if not most, of the courses stay open around Tampa during the summer.

And the drive from TPA to World Woods is not bad at all.  With no traffic I think it is about 1 h, maybe a few minutes more.  And, BTW, I simply love WW.  Been there probably 10 times now for spring break trips over the past 15 years.

Agree with Joe.  From TPA, WW is an easy 60 mile drive north on Suncoast Parkway (589).

Get yourself one of the EZPass equivalents and knock a few min more off the drive.  :)

Not only are the courses open, if you're willing to take a risk (thunderstorms) you can get some fantastic bargains for pm golf.

Many courses open.

World Woods is a good to great bet. Generally in better shape after a bit of a dry spell, but such is the way of things during Florida summers.

Dunedin, north of Clearwater, is a bit closer - traffic depending! Very good Ross on a more-interesting-than-appears-at-first-glance site. Probably one of the tougher opening stretches around. I would pay the green fee of any playing companion that stands on the fifth tee at Dunedin at level par.

Plenty ie almost all are open in the summer. I still think a plane flight to Denver or somewhere in the NW USA would make for a better golf experience than Tampa in the summer especially with those ____wipes coming to town next week.

Kyle Harris,

How is Bloomingdale Golfers Club doing? I enjoyed playing there when we lived in the area. I heard a little over a year ago though that they were struggling a bit.

Thanks for the kind words Tiger.  Perhaps the reason I'll be down there is for that event.

Carl excuse me if the ___wipe stuck a little close to home. Having been exposed to and lived through several political conventions, I can assure you the vast majority of non hospitality industry in the Tampa will think that is a nice word to describe those attendees. Nothing says have a nice day like 40 busses with 50 foot long exploding bloody fetuses on each side riding around town all day and night. I do not mean to rain on your parade. It is a thrill to be a delegate to a National Convention. It is fun for political junkies as well. However it is become less and less pleasurable for the rest of the population as the extremism, polarization and mean spirited dialog becomes more and more entrenched in the party body. I wish you well and a great time.

And I thought Tiger was talking about Alabama playing South Tampa Teachers College on their way to the BCS.  Silly me.....

Ah Rihc you could easily be talking one and the same. The good people of Dallas will be exposed to the horrific sights of giant elephants on mens hats that appear to the sons of Jack Ruby's body guards.  Also the streets will fill with little gump people that appear to be the product of a union of Lee Harvey Oswald and his sister(Daisy ie daily love for my bro Oswald). Next week will be a interesting for the traveling public in two otherwise great American cities.

Never mind, most of the convention attendees will be in the strip clubs downtown..  According to Huff Po, Lisa-Ann, star of 2008's Naylin' Palin, will reprising her 'role' as the former vice-presidential candidate on the stage–and around the pole–at one club. Unfortunately this won't be part of MSNBC or Fox News' convention coverage.

You have to go see it for yourself...

Bill even the nicest and most half full version of you would have trouble with the convention crowd. Of course you will be in San Francisco  upps that is as far from Tampa as a Pensacola guy can get. lol Point well made on the strip clubs. Although I must point out that even repubs can find some other things to do in Tampa like harrasing elderly women and young men thinking they are hookers. And if they are not old enough then go to St Pete and work the truly old gal crowd.

FYI - spoke with a buddy on the phone today who played WW within the last 10 days and said it was in excellent condition which is a bit of a departure from what he and I found there this past December.

Like others have said, it is very rare for courses to close in the summer here in FL.  In fact I don't know of any public courses in the area that close in the summer.  I will echo the recommendations of World Woods and Dunedin, both are great courses.

In regards to Bloomingdale, I haven't played there this summer but the greens were awful this time last year.

All politics aside, I think the bigger-name courses may be fairly busy (when there's not a hurricane) due to convention visitors.  If you can handle the heat of an afternoon round, you're much more likely to have a quiet time.  My dad and I played Pine Barrens earlier this summer, and on the back nine, we had the course to ourselves.

I agree on the high end courses. It will be a bit better weather wise if the hurricane scirts the coast. the winds and cold front will cool down and lower the humidity.

In Tampa...

Tampa Palms...Arthur Hills
TPC...Bobby Weed

If you are driving up to WW and want another fun track check out Silverthorn CC in nearby Brooksville.  Joe Lee design.  Fun layout.  Used to host a Hooters Tour event.
