Dad is off to Lahinch
« on: August 19, 2012, 11:53:17 PM »
My dad has a business trip to Ireland, and has booked a tee time at Lahinch.  He'll be there in early October.  What should he know before he goes (aside from the unusually-high number of aces on the Dell hole)?  Any secrets or things he shouldn't miss?  I want him to have a great time.  Thanks.

UPDATE:

Dad had a fantastic time. Thanks for all of the advice. Here's a photo he shot.

I will be at Lahinch this weekend - so I will let you know!
Haven't played since yesterday, not playing until tomorrow, hardly playing at all!

Take really good rain gear.  Everyone in my group finally turned around and played in when they got soaked in heavy rain driven by 40+ mph wind.  First week of October last year.

If he needs a place to stay for the evening I strongly recommend The Atlantic Hotel. Three minutes from the course, on the main street, great food and in July of 2010 it was $60 for bed and breakfast.

The Vaughan Lodge is also very nice.

It's adjacent to the entrance of the golf course and a block walk from Main Street.

There are some great pubs in town and make sure he checks out the crowds surfing.  Also he may be able to squeeze 36 in if he inquires at the shop.  Hope he enjoys a stiff breeze!  A wonderful course in a great seaside town.  Site of the only Albatross I'm likely to ever witness, on the Klondyke no less.  Hopefully the rough won't be as brutal as it was before the Irish Open when I was there.  I'm sure he'll have a great time.

When at Lahinch, one is only 25 minutes from the Cliffs of Moher.  An absolute MUST SEE.

I like the Lahinch Golf Hotel, but if money is less of an object, Moy House is awesome.

I've been to Lahinch 3 times in my life...I expect that number will reach double digits.  I love it.

I had some friends play about tqo weeks ago. Heavy, wet rough. They said don't form any close personal attachment to your ball. But if you couldn't find yours, it was easy enough to fiind a substitute.  Strategically don't lay up to close to the base of the dune on Klondyke.

Just played there last week and had fabulous conditions.  The key to playing Lahinch is finiding a good caddie.  They have many local kids who are just bag carriers so be sure to speak with Tony on the 1st tee to get a good one.

Your Dad will enjoy nonetheless.

I second the experienced caddie remark. If it is windy try to swing slower and smoother and play the half-shot. Don't try to be too clever when your ball is in the rough - get it back in play asap. Make the bump and run/or Texas wedge your first choice whenever possible. Look around you and enjoy the views.

Visit Frawley's in Lahinch. The owner serves the pints there - he's been doing it since he was about 10 and now he is in his 90s. Assuming he still does it.

Jack,

Tom Frawley shut up shop last year I think... I thought it the most genuine pub I've ever visited, in so much as I literally don't think anything (apart from the kegs) had been changed in about 100 years...

I was in last because Patrick Glynn's uncle Enda had tipped me off that Tom's father had worked on the course when Gibson redesigned it in 1907... So I asked him... But he really couldn't shed any light on it... Was (and still am) looking for any and all information / photos especially from the critical 1928 - 1935 period during which much of MacKenzie's design was changed..

Ally

That's a shame. Maybe someone else will take it over, although he has no children.

Very helpful info, all.  Many thanks.

Dad had already done some homework and had reserved a senior caddy, so I think he'll have fun.

Ah, Lahinch.  Back in '09 I spent 3 days in Lahinch and loved every inch of the place and the town.  I think it would be an unbelievable place to stay a month, learning the course and soaking up the town, which is fantastic.  Glad your dad had a great time.  Hard not to.
