Inspired by a recent read of Tom Macwood's Opinion piece of George Arthur Crump: Portrait of a Legend, it got me thinking about life before and after some of the great courses were discovered and built.

My question for the historically gifted, and for those less so, is to paint a picture of two periods in golf in both the USA and The British Isles for me/us. Separately please?  :)

A kind of the beginning of last century ranking, what courses were aficionado's speaking about, writing letters about, what courses were regarded as the pinnacle, I am sure they didn't have the endless lists of top tens, 100's, etc BUT, what courses in those periods would have been regarded as the top ten?
Did the Links courses of the North dominate the Heathland of the south, or were they not really even classified this way? In the US, east coast vs west vs north vs south??

I am very interested to hear what the DG has to say on this, imagine we are all sitting around in our suits and plus fours, hats and cheese cutters, bibs and braces, and pipes of course - no Internet to be seen or heard....

1916 to 1925 - USA/BRITISH ISLES

Ok, so this thread is not grabbing anyone's interest... :'(

...can anyone point me in the direction of a course opening or architect construction completion time line for either USA or BRITISH ISLES.

Myopia Hunt hosted a number of US Opens in the early 1900s.
Baltusrol's original course (not- tilly) also was supposedly good.
