Tillinghast's Most Famous Holes?
« on: August 09, 2012, 08:00:41 AM »
Woke up thinking that while Tillie has many famous courses, most are known as "man sized" and good overall tests, but whydo his individual holes not get much credit, like Mac's 16th at CPC, always gets most of the play there.

So, I know about many Sahara's, a Little Tilly, and the duel hole, not so famous for architecture, but the history of its locations?

What are his most famous holes?  Most architecturally significant?

The par 3 10th hole at Winged Foot West has to be at or near the top of the list.

I have Tilly tied to the long tough par 4...pretty generic.

Bethpage Black #4 for it cross bunkers....if you don't give him credit for Hell's Half Acre at Pine Valley.

The Barn hole at Baltimore CC. (#6) It is Tilly's tribute to the Road Hole. Severe dog leg left though and tee shot goes over a barn. Very cool hole. 584 from the tips.

Jeff, come to Baltimore and play. You too Jim.

Jeff,

I've always felt that AWT's par 5's were one of his strengths.

Could it be that his body of work is so strong that no one hole stands out from the others ?

The 4th at BPB, because he avoided the obvious left turn into the valley, instead going straight and up and up.

What is glacier hole at BPB?

At least at Bethpage, Tilly never met a ditch he didn't like. Tee on one side, then ravine, then green on other. Over and over and over at Bethpage.

Isn't the Reef hole pretty closely associated with Tillinghast?
