What's the optimal distance to play
« on: August 01, 2012, 11:19:51 PM »
Sebonack from ?

The fairways are generous, but, the greens are difficult, difficult to putt, recover and approach.

I understand the desire to create a very challenging golf course, but, there seems to be a threshold at Sebonack, where even the better player dare not cross, especially on a very windy day.......... as compared to just a windy day.

I have played Sebonack only once. I played from the second longest tees and found it playable, even in the rain. I didn't think the length was as important as placement.

Tommy,

I don't know the conditions you experienced, but, "in the rain" would seem to indicate that F&F was not in residence.

The defense at Sebonack, while well bunkered, randomly, is at the green end.

The conditions were not fast and firm.  I played with an asst who helped guide me and a caddie who showed me where to hit it on the green.  The greens were relatively slow so they did not frighten as they would if they were up to speed.

If the greens are the obstacle, why does the distance matter?

Or, to answer literally... 6 inches?

I watched two guys between a +1 and a -2 struggle mightily from 6800.  If the wind is up, that might be the threshold.  Based on the difficulty of greens surfaces, approach options, I think that would suffice for the alien category of TOUR pros if the wind was really up.

That said, anything over 6600 for the ladies is going to murder next summer.  Especially if the greens are rolling fast (>12).

Pat, define "optimal" in this case.

The forward tees are optimal for scoring, but the better player should scoot back and take his beating. Playing the back nine with a chance to break 80 is a rare rush for most of us, and it's a shame that strong players like you so rarely get to experience it.

" Webster's Dictionary" does a far better job.

I experienced the thrill of breaking 100, 90, 80 and 70 as my handicap was on the descent and I'll experience the thrill as my handicap ascends.
