How much influence do the East End clubs have
« on: August 01, 2012, 11:14:57 PM »
on each other ?

Is there an element of "keeping up with the Joneses ?"

Do each of the courses benefits made to the other courses ?

And, beyond the East End, with respect to local clubs in the same general area, how much influence do the clubs have on each other ?

And, how much influence does one of the iconic clubs have on the other local clubs ?

Pat has to be reffering to London's East End right?  At last a proper thread on the Olympics. ;)

He knows nothing of the East End, probably never had pie and mash in Manzies either.

Or maybe this thread is one designed to tell us (boast) about all the clubs he plays each week and then slag us off when we offer an opinion on the topic as we don't know what we are talking about. Just a hunch  ;)

Us morons may not care what the East End Clubs do. I do think the most clubs march to their own drums except when a President or group in leadership have ties to a course of note which creates a desire to be more like them. I see it mostly in the area of finance where even the most prosperous clubs watch what the situation is at other clubs. It may be in certain areas of the country where stature and desire to talk about you one knows and where one sees them and what one does with them makes this more of an issue. Fortunately I do not have much of that at my clubs.

Tiger,

Of all people, I would have expected that you would have read the last two sentences.

Don't be an M.I.T.

Go back and reread the initial thread.

Count me as a moron (how long can you hold off?) but nothing in your original post identifies the east end of anything.

Ron,

I already counted you once, counting you twice would be double dipping and misleading when trying to quantify the number of morons on this site.

The term, "East End" has been used so often and so many times on this site that I thought it was generally understood that the reference was to Long Island's East End.

Once again I completely overestimated the basic data base in the minds of the morons on this site.

Without wishing to descend to insults, I would consider the continual use of abbreviations known only to an inner cabal, the assumption that one's parochial world view is shared across the globe, those irritatiing thread titles, and the childish use of green type displays a level of 'moronicness' unmatched by anyone else on this site.

 ;D

The majority here clearly had no idea that you were referring to some island off New York...

...why would they?

You seem determined to become the 'New Melvyn'!

Back to the OP.  My answer to each of the 5 questions is the same.  I don't know and I don't care.
In July I will be riding two stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity, including Mont Ventoux for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

I'm was born and raised in New York State.  Took NY Geography every year in school, and I've never heard of the term "East End" to refer to Suffolk County.

How would folks here know about the influences of Long Island clubs unless you're from there?  Honestly, I'd think that the great clubs out there have a certain degree of privacy and most of us wouldn't know anything about them.

Even before the Olympics, when I hear "East End", I think London.  And I'm a parochial midwestern schmoe.

Reminds me of years ago I was in NY visiting an actor friend and hanging out with her friends. On of my favourites was this guy from Chicago - good guy. And, since my favourite musician and my favourite playwright also came from Chicago, I say to him: "You Chicago people are the best".  And he says, "There's a theory about that. Anyone who ever immigrated from overseas to America must have had courage and moxie.  Amongst those, the ones who had the least courage and moxie arrived in New York and stayed there. The ones who had more courage and moxie kept coming west, to Chicago.  The ones who were nuts went on to California.  So, you have cowards in New York and nutbars in California, and the best people right in Chicago".  Keep keeping it schmoe-y, Shivas!!

Peter

P.S. - Bob: there's a movie script there, the parochial southern redneck at Harvard.

PSS - I knew what Pat was asking about right away; but my insight was useless, as I am not among the 120 people in the world in a position to compare and contrast the LI courses from personal experience.  Ironic, no?

I think I answered Pat with my last line noted clubs where the people who visit for the season drop names or who they know etc. That is especially true  during the month of August in the Hamptons. Sadly one of my friends from Houston who loves to drop names, who what where they do what with is spending the month of August there now. Naturally not being a local or even a visitor for the month I do not know where the demarcation line golf club wise is between East end and the rest of the Hamptons. Thank goodness our favorite local dentist is the best of guys and knows all on these and other eastern Long island subjects can answer Pat straight away when he choses.  To answer Pat's base question. I really do not have friends in the leadership of these clubs to know the answer of how they influence and are influenced by those around them.

Sorry I knew what pat was talking about and have no clue as to what goes on at the East End Clubs.

In answer to his question about "influence".  Westhcester County has many fine classic era courses, Winged Foot has had an inordinate amount of influence on what clubs do to their golf courses.  I do think that has changed a bit in the last few years but clearly it influenced some of the maintenance as well as renovation practices in this area.

I can't tell you how many times I heard "bunkers like Winged Foot" ???
