Golf Course News "suspends publication"
« on: July 03, 2003, 12:15:37 PM »
For 15 years Golf Course News has provided plenty of great stories, interviews and more recently, quality debates on issues in the development business. Apparently the state of the business has caught up to it and the print version is gone. Its parent company is going to be putting it's resources into "Gourmet News, HME News and Security Systems News."

Dang.  I hope the Newswire doesn't walk the plank next.  It's a good site for information.

Sad to hear.  For years, the NGF had a newsletter covering the golf biz.   It was paid for by our dues, but wasn't great.  I always thought GCN did a better job, thinking the ad revenue allowed a bit better resources to cover costs.

Apparently, the idea of a higher profile golf newspaper was simply good in good times.

Kind of off topic ( but not really)

I was thinking about Lynn's (and others including myself) and whether he thinks what is happening in the market (or perhaps the economy is the better question).

Has this downturn run out of steam? Or, is this blip up just people pretending things are really O.K.?

Does this mag's closure say anything to the overall golf mkt.? or, the abuse of power towards anyone rocking the boat?

Anytime a publication closes it is a sad day not just for the people involved, but for the readers and the area that was covered. As most of us across the country have realized news coverage has gone consistently down hill as a result of reduced competition as more and more cities become one-paper towns. (From my own area the Hartford Courant gets a D- for its coverage of our slimy governor.)

The staff at Golf Course News was dedicated and hard working. I hope they all find work soon.

That guy Goldberg(?) author of BIAS, was on tv last night talking about how the top ranked newscast draws the same numbers as those of the 25th ranked newscast, 25 years ago.

What would we have to do to get a similar paper or magazine/newsletter up and running again?
