Supplementing my post above, although there are no initiation or trail  fees here at Pebble Creek, there is an upfront cost- namely, the cost of buying a golf cart for golf and traveling around within the gates of the community. The choices are- "Reconditioned" (lightly used) or "Rebuilt"(new batteries, tires and seating) or "New" Costs range from $1500 up to $10,000+ We bought a "Rebuilt" in the middle of the price range.

Why settle on only one location for retirement? Thought-provoking WSJ article on "retirement on the road."

In short, we're senior gypsies. In early 2011 we sold our house in California and moved the few objects we wanted to keep into a 10-by-15-foot storage unit. Since then, we have lived in furnished apartments and houses in Mexico, Argentina, Florida, Turkey, France, Italy and England. In the next couple of months, we will live in Ireland and Morocco before returning briefly to the U.S. for the holidays.

While not focused on golf, the same idea can apply.

Trump just bought the Ritz down here in Jupiter, Fl. I hear the new membership will drop from $225,000 to $50,000 plus he'll give you $5m if you give him your college transcripts and passport.
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta
