Dormie Club Trip - Looking for ideas for my wife

Bringing a group of 8 couples to Pinehurst in October (October 11-14).  Staying at the resort. 

Guys playing 18 a day and girls getting a 90 minute spa.  Playing Dormie on Thursday, #4 on Friday, #2 on Saturday and #8 on Sunday.  Can't tell you what spa treatments our wives are getting.

A lot of damage can be done during a 4+ hour round.

I remain dumbfounded of $100 for a "pricey bath" (my name for it) at Kohler.

I was there a couple weeks ago and am in Sandhills every month. No scuttlebutt of going private anytime soon. I don't see it happening in the next few years. Maybe if they build a lodge of some type, etc but it is sort of out in the middle of nowhere. Hard to see people joining and not being able to stay on site. From what I gather every private club in Sandhills will accept new members that qualify so there isn't a pent up local demand.

I plan  to go to Dormie and possibly Tobacco Road and #2 the first weekend in October when the SAS is being played at my home course.  Anyone interested please let me know.

I would highly encourage the thought of delaying, or returning, to the Sandhills for the 3rd presentation by Richard Mandell & Co. of the Symposium for Affordable Golf, Oct.29-30. I'm planning to put a small Dormie Club group together if possible, Southern Pines is a treat and the company of the attendees is superb. It is as engaging and educational a golf ecxperience as I've ever been a part of, on so many levels. Give it some thought and IM me if you need more details.

I agree.  Can't imagine them making a go of it as a fully private club right now, or any time soon.  Established clubs with complete facilities are stuggling to keep/find members.  The Dormie Club is not established or complete.  Great golf course, yes.  But there are, as mentioned, issues.

Kris: I am now living in Cary so a drive over to Pinehurst is no big deal. The symposium would no doubt be very interesting and I hope to attend although I am now playing at a course that is owned by one individual so my opinion on anything to do with the courses is not given much credence.

Sorry to revise an old thread, but I recently received a Xmas offer from Dormie Club.  What's curious about the offer is that it seems to suggest, without actually saying, that the club may be going fully private in 2013. Has anyone heard any news about this?

I went to Pinehurst for the first time in November, but I could not get the guys in my group to change their plans and play Dormie, much to my disappointment. So, I'm hoping that Dormie may still allow visitors in 2013 and beyond. Unfortunately, that sounds increasingly unlikely.

What that offer says is that Dormie is going fully private on January 1 but you can take advantage of your rounds purchased with that offer until March 1.  It's a very good offer, anybody that plans on playing Dormie before March 1 should take advantage of it.

Bummer.  I guess I didn't bother to read the fine print. Fortunately, I'm much better reading the fine print in my professional life (attorney) than in my personal life.

Got the same e-mail offer.  Great deal for last chance opportunity to play Dormie as public.

I cannot recommend Dormie Club enough.  Dormie is an absolute must play in Pinehurst.  The first 4 holes at Dormie may be one of the best starts that I have ever played.   Higher handicappers will also enjoy it as it is very playable for all players.

Glad I had a chance to play it.

Brian thanks for bringing the special up.  I'm in pinehurst and tried calling today to book it but no one answered.  Sent an email as well but figure no one will see it since they're closed Mondays and then Tuesday is Xmas and the deal will be over.

I find it hard to believe it is going private. I think they are going to enforce a limit on the times a person can play it but this is just my unsubtantiated opinion. This email offer is great and the rounds don't count against whatever the limit is.

I was there in late October, played and was squired around by the venerable Cory Lewis and agree, despite a slightly compromised presentation, it is a must play! Bob Hansen, a principle and an engaging, driving force behind the project, told me directly that they planned to go private Jan 1. 2013. Time will tell how that evolves.

I've always felt the private/limited outside play model works best in DC's realm. The first priority is to have the presentation in first class order. Without that, you don't stand much of a chance, especially in today's demanding economic climate. Give the members excellent value ( very modest guest fees, permission to book some unaccompanied play at slightly higher rates) and charge a premium rate for limited outside play(2-4 foresomes a day), usually secured by higher-level club recipricals or, more generally, written requests...and you have the best of all worlds. That balance, to me...is what truly constitutes a GREAT club; one with INCLUSIVENESS based on a real love and appreciation for special golfing ground and sharing it with others. One doesn't need to exclude to achieve an elite status...the total quality of the experience confirms that...not who was denied access.
