Re: It's Irish Open Week At Royal Portrush, Is Anyone Going?
« Reply #1 on: June 26, 2012, 06:30:42 PM »
My father is up there today through Thursday - initial reports are the course being in good condition, roughs quite high & weather looks average at best.

Our working theory is that the course plays easier set up for the Irish Open than member's play, at least in one dimension. The rough is only "heavy" for 5-10 years before we get to the spectator areas & its all tramped down. I believe this is more of a feature of a links course as, while it happens on other Tour stops, the lack of trees make a big difference.

Anyone pick a winner? Really hope for an Irish one.

Sky Sports have just said that yesterday's gate at RP was the biggest in European Tour history. Looks like a success so far!

It's certainly the GREENEST Links I think I've ever seen!!!
Not surprising, given the rainfall these Isles have seen the past two months...

Martin

I have watched some of it but I am more waiting to watch on the weekend....life and all gets in the way.

The guys are going low, is it the weather?
Although I did see Rory hit his tee shot on Calamity and his divot exited stage left pretty bloody quick.

Very much looking forward spending Sunday with my dad at his place, eating good food and drinking his good wine while watching the final round.
Next to Carne, my favorite course.

Love Scotland, Cruden Bay, The Machrie, Machrihanish, Royal Dornoch, Old Moray, among all the other usual suspects.
Portrush and Carne are special courses for me and the old man, we had some good times on those courses.

Portrush was the "passing of the torch" between me and the old man, it was the first time I took him down.

Passing of the torch is a reference to the Montreal Canadiens, they have the quote from "Flanders Fields" scrolled across the top of the locker room:

To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high

The course looks incredible on hi def, it is great to see a links courses you have played in hi def.
