Storms hit Congressional, DC area
« on: June 30, 2012, 10:11:58 AM »
Tremendous storms swept through DC/MD/VA area overnight. Congressional was pummeled, with 40+ trees knocked down. Photos:

3rd round of the tournament is delayed until 1pm and will be played without spectators or volunteers on the grounds. Should make for interesting TV.

More importantly, is everyone in that area safe?

Huge tree came down on our house (we live in the district), but the damage was less extensive than it could've been.  Something like 1.5 million people without power in the metro area.

Amen to that Ed...  Thank goodness we still have our power.

The golf today should be fascinating to see on TV.   The PGA Tour obviously is doing the right thing by keeping everybody off the course.

What a MESS!  Brings back memories from 1986, June 14 at 3:15PM. Was working at Chevy Chase Club (Bethesda area) and we got hit by straight line winds, really bad storm.  They called it a "microburst" at that time but same kind a deal as hit Congo yesterday.  It's a devistating storm and amazing how much damage is done in a short time.

Best wishes to Mike, his crew and all the volunteers.  They are out there working harder than ever in near tropical heat and humidity.  It's not fun and I hope they look out for each other.

At least no A..holes will be shouting "go in the hole" today.

Huge storm in Hershey 4:00AM Friday. All Hershey CC courses closed Friday and the West course closed until Monday. Loads of debris on the course and stuff still up in the canopy that they need to get out for safety reasons. Except for some clean up my house was spared but two houses had trees on their roofs on my 8 block walk to work on Friday. A lot of energy in these storms.

Great point.  PGA needs a butthole filtering system

We got obliterated at Atlantic City Country Club too. No power for 3 maybe 4 days. Shore road has power lines toppled over by trees left and right and I could barely get through the streets from my place in Somers Point. It's almost impossible to get a generator right now for our irrigation system. A lot of trees down too but I'm not complaining about that all. It's going to be a long long week. The funny thing I looked at the weather forecast yesterday before I set up irrigation and saw nothing like this coming.

Ian - none of us did.  In my opinion, the National Weather Service was caught unaware until it was too late.

Then again, we only get derechos like this once every 4/5 years in these parts.

Ian Larson, I didn't realize you were down in my neighborhood as well.   I am in EHT on Blackman Rd, work on Hingston Ave.
Lots of trees down on the main roads-Fire Rd, Blackman Rd, and one in my yard.  Didn't see any of the area golf courses yet.  Our power was out, obviously, not sure if it's back on now.

Dan, did the, or is the, NWS unable to predict these things unless there are certain variables?  I am reading the articles you provided, and they are good.

So, how will the absence of fans affect pace of play?  Should speed things up considerably.  Great opportunity to actually find out how quickly/slowly the pros play.

Doug,
We can discuss the quality of NWS forecast products offline :)
