Lookout Point is a sleeper of a course built on the side of the Niagara Escarpment. The property is very dramatic and the greens not only contain great internal contours, but prove even more vexing due to the effect the escarpment has on your putts.

There are some great par 3s, 4s, 5s and some original Travis work which is always exciting.

That has to be one of the coolest looking sets of greens I've ever seen, at least as far as photos go. Looks like a blast.

Too often this site gets hung up on only discussing natural looking courses. It's nice to see a totally different but still really cool aesthetic profiled.

Some of y'all have never been called out in bold green font and it really shows.

I have played many of the good courses in Southern Ontario but I haven't played Lookout Point yet.  I definitely have to make it down there one of these days.

Thanks for posting those pictures, I've always been curious about that course. There are a lot of interesting holes, and a lot of interesting green complexes.

Frank,

I played the course only once--45 years ago--and I still remember the great opening tee shot from the escarpment. I also remember the terrific greens there. I do not remember the trees at all, however. I suspect that both the trees have grown a lot and the club has added many.  :(

3rd hole looks great, love the built up green and the angle. The built up back of the green reminds me of the quarry hole at Cork GC.

Lester: Couldn't agree more.

Jim: The third was my favorite on course. 14 and 15 were pretty good too.

Summer of 2012 Travis Mini-Tour (Cherry Hill, Troy, Lookout Point) concluded today with the second USA/Canada match. Once again, Team USA (montesano/lynch) went down to defeat against Team Canada (saltzman/Ian Andrew), albeit only 1 down on the 18th hole. Unfortunately for Team USA, there was no Swedish referee around and neither Saltzman nor Andrew holds onto the ball for more than 5 seconds.

Lookout was in fabs condition. Don't think my 350 photos add anything to Frank's pictorial, so I won't waste space with another.

Congrats Team Canada...when do I get a shot at representing?

You guys are KILLING ME with these Travis course profiles.  How far is Lookout Point from Buffalo?  Might need to add a day to the 2013 Hillbilly Tour.

Thanks for the wonderful profile.

Bogey, both Cherry Hill and Lookout Point are about 30 min from Buffalo.

Hendren, do you have a Confederate States passport? They won't let you into Canada without one.

No, but as a young man I was a passenger on the Maid of the Mist.  That, and for a fat man I am surprisingly quick at serpentine running.

Question to all:  Do you recommend Bob Labbance's biography of Travis?

Pretty much. Ian went over it, ending up 20 yards short of the green. The rest of us played left of it.

My guess is that The Old Man has been dialed into these CC of Troy and Lookout Point posts.  Ben Crenshaw said it best when he said, according to a former pro at Hollywood Golf Club, "Travis created the greatest greens in the world."

I've been fortunate to be able to play LPCC on many occasions over the past 18 years.  It is very difficult for me to pick out a favorite hole.  Each has its intrigue and challenge.  Coupled with the effects of the escarpment and very interesting terrain, its a course that grabs and keeps your attention.  I am very impressed with how Frank's pictures capture the excitement of that course.

If I may:  There is no better source for learning about, and understanding Walter Travis than the biography by Bob Labbance.  Sadly, our good friend passed away before he could realize his desire to create a second Travis book.  Within 5 years of the first book, he was convinced that we had gathered sufficient information about Travis's courses to produce the second book.

The Travis Society has the remaining inventory of new copies of "The Old Man", including those autographed by Bob.  Contact us if you are interested.
