Pine Tree GC Regrassing-Update (pics)
« on: June 21, 2012, 03:23:27 PM »
We are only a few days away from starting the actual regrassing of the fairways. 3 applications of herbicides have been applied, verticut multiple times and aerified to a depth of 10". We are ready to have new turfgrass on the fairways, as looking at dead turf gets old after 8 weeks.
We have also completed the regrassing of bunkers and green surrounds on holes #1-6. The turf on #1-3 is fully established. We have begun topdressing these areas and will work in the intermediate cut. We will add new bunker sand at the end of the summer, as to not risk contamination from summer rains. The following are a few photos of the work to date. Enjoy!

Tony, Ibis has been sending weekly updates and it seems it has been going well too. Have you been in contact with them since they have started...RHE

Tony,

Thanks for the pics. What's the background to this work? Maintenance, repair or some new modifications to the course?

Mr Emmons,
I have not spoken to the guys at Ibis directly, but I understand through a vendor, that things are on track. We send out weekly emails, with photos, update the maintenance blog along with twitter, as much as possible. With 80% of our membership up north for the summer, these have been important tools of communication for us.
The reason for the renovation is several-inferior previous grass, questionable bunker design and tremendous encroachment of common bermudagrass in the fairways, but also the green surrounds. The intention of the renovation is to have better turf for our membership in the winter months. The new celebration turf will require more summer maintenance-verticutting and aerification, but that will not effect a majority of our membership.

Tony,

Did the storm that was stalled over South Florida have any effect on the grassing process ?

Mr. Mucci,
We had 6.5" of rain here at the club. The farm, where the grass is coming from have nearly 12" and flat landdoesnt drain well. We were set back as week, but by the end of today, we should have the front 9 fairways completed.

Tony...the bunker edges look very clean in your pics...Weren't they more jagged after the previous renovation?  Love the course!

Steve,
You are correct. When the bunkers were redone in 2005, they were very lacy, toothy, edgy. What that Mr. Wilson's orginal intent? Thats up for another debate. That type of edging, because of the way bermudagrass grows, compared to cool season turf is much harder to maintain and keep looking that way. Generally speaking, Mr. Wilson's bunkers looked more like NCR, the old Cog Hill, LaCosta, Lancaster.

We opened last Friday and other than the relenting rains this summer, things have been very positive. You'd be hard pressed to convince me that there is a better fairway grass than Celebration. Upright, aggressive, dark color, wear tolerant. Very good turfgrass.

It looks awesome - congrats on completing such a massive undertaking - you did all this in-house, right?

Yes, all the work was done in house. We hired the sprigging out to Quality Grassing, but the prep work was done by all. All the sod work for the bunkers, green surrounds and clubhouse were done by staff. About 50 semi truck loads, or around 7.5-8acres of sod.

Wow!! The place looks great. Great work by you and your staff during the brutal Florida summers.

That second to last pic looks a lot like Seminole to me.

Congrats again on a job well done

Tony,

The pics look great!  I am headed down this weekend to check it out.

I am not surprised Steve Scott loves the course. He holds the course record. I think a 61.

I thought it was 60, lucky for him he hit the water hazard stake on # 18.

Mike, let me know what you think after you've played.

Tony,

How will the grass react when it goes dormant ?
Does it go dormant ?

Thanks Pat. I couldn't remember the score. I haven't seen that many threes on a scorecard since I last played miniature golf. Thanks for the plug in the other thread.

Cheers

Mr Mucci
It would go dormant is we were more north, but actually holds its cooler and stays a little more active when its colder, which will be great for us in season. Mr Policano-I will look for you this weekend. Look forward to your thoughts.
Randy-Aries for me..not sure if that's always good, but striving to always get better. This process is really taking off here is south FL and is a very affordable option...$2k/acre
