RJ,

It's definitely LOFT.

Time to see "the Sarge" for more lessons.

I think you're right about absorption of impact being another factor.

RJ,
Thanks.  ;D

Pat,
I'll try it another way.  ;) The diameter of all the flagsticks used was 1/2" -   where the ball made contact with them.

I've asked before but never recieved an answer.  Beside Merion using Baskets and 99% of other clubs using flags, is there any other item that can be placed on top of a flag stick?

I've often thought of a variation of the Merion wicker baskets, and top the pin off with a wicker money collection plate like they pass in churches....  ::)

After 10 years, this thread comes to the top!

I have experimented with many flagsticks in the last decade! I agree with Mr. Daley that indeed the weight of the heavier wooden stick increases deflection. There's simply not as much "give." I wish someone would do a test like Mr. Kennedy described with a lighter fiberglass pole versus a heavier wooden pole of the same size and diameter? Love to see this data.

My home course has some really nice wooden flagsticks (and rakes). They are incredibly well-done and maintained.

It's a detail that I love about the course.

Here are a few photos...

They also have them on the practice greens..

They've also written a bit about the process of maintaining these on the maintenance blog at http://hasentreegcmaintenance.blogspot.com/search/label/Wooden%20Products

My friend Ken Van Tol at Cheesebrough makes all sorts of wooden rakes, flagsticks and markers. He and his family handcraft everything. Not only are they well made, but they last incredibly.

Does anyone have a general idea how much these cost in relation to the basic (fiberglass?) pins used at most courses? I love the look of these wooden accessories (my course has them on our putting green), but I don't know if the idea would be quickly shot down by the various committees due to cost.

I understand that. But not everyone else does. I was just curious how much more that value costs.

Call Ken at Cheesebrough. I think he can give you some quick pricing on standard models.
