hey everyone,

going to disney for a family wedding in a few months.   looking for any recommendations for golf, assuming i can sneak out for a morning or two.

in the past, i've played orange country national, which i liked (not great, but interesting for FL golf, especially crooked cat).

Is there anything else I should be considering?  I know the Disney courses are horrible and overpriced.

I haven't been personally but if I were in your shoes I would try to sneak out of the gates and make my way down to Mountain Lake. I believe it's only ~45 SW of Disney. My guess is the head professional of one Raynor might be able to get you on another Raynor

I liked Southern Dunes.  It is tightly packed with housing but it was an interesting layout at a reasonable price.

Joel Zuckerman played it in January while in town for the PGA Show and said it was in great shape.

I thought Sugarloaf was excellent.  Conditioning was good enough, greens were slow (maybe 7 or but well grassed and rolled fine.  The layout is eye-catching and unusual for FL, but a good 45 minutes into the boondocks from Orlando.

Beyond Sugarloaf, Southern Dunes, Deltona, Victoria Hills, CC of Orlando, Mountain Lake and others are often recommended on previous threads.  A few helpful links to comb through:

Just played Sugarloaf on Saturday afternoon. Apart from the general degradation of the bunkers the course is in quite playable shape.

If you don't want to venture as far as Sugarloaf or others, try North Shore.  It's by the airport and I like it a lot.  Was a cheap course to build, but a fun routing and tough/fast green.  Definitely plays fast and firm.

Is it an hour and 15 minutes from the Grand Floridian or that far from Orlando.  That could be a game changer on a $200 nut.

I don't know if they have placed limits on the number of rounds during the first month.  Remember, they are not just getting the course grown in now ... most of the Blue course and half the Red will have been in playable shape for most of a year before opening day ... the course should be able to handle a fair amount of traffic.

I travelled to Orlando last year to visit friends / go to Disney / sneak in a game of golf.

For what its worth, my mate and I got time for one round and chose Championsgate - International. I found it mediocre at best, and would go elsewhere if I was to return.

Mark, one option close to the park is to go to Highlands Reserve.  Like Jason's recommendation of North Shore, it was laid out by Mike Dasher (a sometimes poster on the board).

Steve Smyers did Southern Dunes just S of that.  And he also did Bridgewater just down I-4 a short bit toward Tampa.

Hopefully it dries out!
