Courtesy of Tom Doak, here are 3 large pics of The Rawls.
Sorry to the dial-up folks, I can't crop them (the skies) until
I get home.

#14 fairway and green (499 yard par 4 - not a misprint):

This was a dead-flat site, wasn't it?

It must make a man feel like a god to remake the Earth
this way.

Wow, I'm gonna have to give grad school more thought...
Big drivers and hot balls are the product of golf course design that rewards the hit one far then hit one high strategy.  Shinny showed everyone how to take care of this whole technology dilemma. - Pat Brockwell, 6/24/04

To help get a little better feel for the layout of these holes,
here's the layout again (copied from Doak's Rawls thread):

I love the bunker 80 or 100 yds from the green on a 499 yd par 4....I hope it traps lots of women, kids and old men...the ole 8 or 80 bunker.

Tom,

Can you share what turfgrasses you planted throughout the course?

Not sure I'm too sweet on those buttes behind the 13th green.

What's being blocked out there?

So Mike, let me get this straight:  Rees designs mounds and Tom designs buttes ;)

Mike and Mike:  We called them bluffs, not buttes.  We had to build up something pretty high in order to block out the two-story apartment houses across the street on the eastern side of the property!  They're actually 10-12 feet high, and built in a long continuous ridge, so as to look like the top was the original ground level and the course is eroded down from there.  But, I could be bluffing!

Jaka B:  I hope the ladies and children realize they can't reach the green in two, and play to the 25 yards of fairway to the left of the bunker.

Come on Tom, the scorecard says par 4, which is just another way of saying "go for the green in two, no matter what!"  You cant possible expect women, children, or anyone else to play based on their own game instead of the number on the scorecard, can you?

My first thought regarding the bunker was, "Wow, what a perfect kicker to help get my weak, short ball on or near the green in two.  I guess I just must not be a 'women and children first' kind of guy.

David and or Tom,

I think you both know that I really do like that bunker and most features exactly like it....as a matter of fact I was thinking later this day that that bunker would be a perfect place for a trap door leading directly to Bob Knights office..I'm sure he would love the company.   (a nice use of "that that" don't you think)

I just shrunk the size of the pics (in bytes) by a lot, making it
a lot easier for the dial-up folks, although the actual sizes
were only shrunk by 25%-28% (all sky).

I think the trap door is a bad idea.  You may not know this, but Bob Knight has a reputation for having a bit of a temper.  I would hate to see any women or children enter the bunker and suddenly find themselves in Knight's office during one of his tantrums.

Guys,

Women, children, old men or general short hitting ordinary golfers (or any other demographic that hits it 180 off the tee)NEVER think of getting to a 500 yard hole in two, no matter WHAT par is on the card. They just keep hitting it and hitting it until they are on the green.
