Willie Lock

William Lock designed SFGC, Lake Merced, Cal Club of SF and Lake Chabot, that I know of. I'm sure there are more.

Was he the most important golf architect residing in the Bay Area during those formative years? Who were some of the others?

1910 to 1925, which is true for most American major metros.

For some reason I was thinking Mahan had something to do with Cal Club.    Conversely I recall Willie Lock was active in the Pacific Northwest during this time period.

Some corrections

SFGC was not a Lock design as he came over amid construction after leaving Sequoyah where he was involved with the construction there as well. It appears that he helped place some bunkers at SFGC, but by then most of the work would have been done.

Lake Merced- yes, he beat out Fowler and Watson for that one

Cal-Club- Lock should be given credit for the original routing and Macan came in during construction and made some changes where the club let him, but there was more work to be done than the club seemed to allow.

Lake Chabot- yes

Yes Lock did some work up in the PNW.

Its not like he was in Anchorage, Oakland is just across the Bay. So Lock was brought to SFGC for his construction expertise; who designed the course that Lock built? I take it his reputation as golf architect increased as time went on.

Correct me if I'm wrong at the time of the great Panama-Pacific International exhibition of 1915 there were five 18-hole courses in the Bay Area - Burlingame, Claremont, Sequoyah, Presidio and Ingleside (SFGC). Six if you count Watson's proposed expansion of Lincoln Park. Who were the architects involved with those five courses?
