Letter from Emmett to Travis at Garden City
« on: June 20, 2012, 08:39:20 PM »
Does anyone know the exact wording of the 3 or 4 line letter from Devereux Emmett to Walter Travis that hangs in the clubhouse at Garden City?

Mike:

I will look tomorrow in the club history book to see if it's quoted.  If not, I'll get it for you in October, when we are there to restore #12 green.

Tom,

Thanks - its brilliant and something like 'We used to be such great friends. Now we barely speak. Can we be friends again?'

Probably we all have a letter like that we should write. I know I do.

I took a picture of it when i was there:

"My dear Travis

We were friends so long & I have always regretted our estrangement.  Cannot we be friends again? [i think it then states] Most sincerely, Devereux"

I will try to post the picture in a minute...

I'm not sure how he signed it. I think the little doodlings by the date are interesting.

Mike,

I may stop by there this weekend.
If I do, I'll take a look at how he signed it.

Patrick,

Thanks for that.
I dropped a Royal Melbourne book off when we were there in April. There are some nice pictures in there.

It looks like "Yrs. Sincerely" which would mean "Yours Sincerely"  I guess.

The doodles are strange.  I wonder if they were DE's doodles or perhaps WT's.  I can imagine WT rereading the letter and doodling absentmindedly.

Golf history can be quite interesting if you just let your favorite legends go and allow the truth to take you where it will.

I bet Emmett's fountian pen (or someone elses) was running out of ink.  I do the same thing when it's running low.
