If the US Open was not in the US why would the USGA be involved?
Heathrow might require a few alterations, but it is firm, fast, narrow and treeless, all of which are important.
Pat,I'm not sure any Australian club would let the USGA come in and do what they do. We enjoy playing off short grass too much - and look on in horror at the type of golf shots we see at the US Open. I would hope they would all be strong enough to stand up for the values of the game here and eschew the overuse of long grass. But you are right - if it was to be anywhere it would be The Australian - which Nicklaus has just started to rebuild - after rebuilding it in 1977.
