Based on how Tiger is hitting, I would be shocked if he finishes out of top three and would give him even odds for winning the whole thing.

He's going to win this thing in a runaway.  He's hitting it really fricking good.

I know it's only Thursday but he is thinking his away around the course, that's something we haven't seen in years from Tiger.

So if he wins this after the Memorial, is he officially "back"?

He's won 3 times in 7 months and is ranked 4th in the world. That's a career for most guys on Tour. But the only thing Tiger or the media cares about are the majors. He won't be "back" until he has won 19 of them.

So Dave's backing Tiger and Jud has his doubts. Next Melvyn will be promoting golf carts and Nikes latest driver.

After seeing his course management today and swing, I am chaniging my original percentages: New percentages are the following,
Winning: 16 to 21%, finishing in top five, 83.78% and missing the cut .0001%  ::)

I just can't wait to see the precious looks on everyone's face, especially Tiger, after he drops a messy 76 in the afternoon round tommorow as the course bakes out...

Kalen,

The harder it plays the more it plays into his hands when he's playing like this.  The only question is will he be playing like this all weekend.

Jud,

You are of course very right.... I suspect he'll be able to do it now that he has his confidence back...that was the key ingredient missing from the last couple years IMO.  He went surgical on Olympic today, didn't make many mistakes, and focused on fairways and greens.

I would expect to see more of the same for the weekend...unless someone flies in Elin to follow him around on the golf course!!

T2 behind Michael Thompson. Not too shabby.

Man, I remember when Michael Thompson was playing center for the Trail Blazers...nice to see he has a second career.

Well one thing is dead certain, Tiger will have a good nite tonight, not having to make up any ground. Confidence is a terrific thing!!!!!!!!!!!!
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

The thing that he has to be feeling good about is he could have easily been 4 or 5 under the way he was hitting it.  Just brush up on his short iron yardages a bit on the range, hit a few putts and get a good nights's sleep...How many holes require him to hit a draw, because that controlled stinger fade 300 down the middle looks pretty deadly for this setup?

I really think if he only hit some version of the stinger and didn`t carry his driver at all that he would be far better off. He has proven just how good he is without hitting it and how much angst it causes when he can`t get it in play. Is there anybody out there that thinks he can`t win majors without it?

He will dominate with that stinger on courses that are firm and fast. Bay Hill was brown in areas. Murifield although green was firm and the ball was rolling despite the rain during the week and on Friday. Hoylake and Pebble played this way.

His overall control with this shot was always been of the charts. It's now his go to shot that is helping rebuild his confidence and his swing. It helps when he can rip it low and get some 30+ yards of roll.

Tiger was impressive yesterday (admittedly, I didn't see much of his round, other than his great low hook out of the rough, and his long putt that was headed to San Jose that found the cup).

However......

-- I think he had the advantage of starting on 9, and thus played a lot of golf before hitting the brutal first six holes. (So did half the field, and Tiger took advantage in ways that folks like his playing partners did not....just saying, though.)

-- Tiger in his pre-round press conference said anyone who played the first six holes even par would pick up a "boatland" of strokes on the field. To me, that's where Tiger made his round -- two birdies, one bogey, and three pars on the first six holes, that played as five of the six hardest holes yesterday: http://www.usopen.com/en_US/scoring/cstats.html If he continues to play that well on holes 1-6 the rest of the way, he will be very difficult to catch. I'll be interested to see how he handles that stretch today right out of the gate.
