Trump, of course.
« on: June 07, 2012, 06:24:09 PM »
Donald Trump assures us that people who know him think him very intellegent. Since he is at least periphially involved in creating a lot of courses with a lot of press, I wondered if anyone here has met him? What was you impression of his architecture understanding? What was your impression of his intellect?

While I am one of the people  least interested in celebrities, and am curious about someone this controversial in several other areas [golf architecture, business, politics].

Where is everybody? Where is Tommy N? Where is John K? Where is Jay F? What has happened here? Has my absence caused this chaos? I'm sorry. All my rowdy friends have settled down ......... somewhere else!

He's very intelligent, very detail oriented and would do well on this site.

He can also be very charming and he has a good sense of humor.

He also produces a well maintained golf course

Others will undoubtedly offer opinions to the contrary, but I can only vouch for my opinion.

I've never met the man, but it's hard to image he is intelligent and just chooses to come across as a baboon.

The one time I met him for any considerable length of time, I found him charming, intelligent, and genuinely interested in the game of golf and golf courses.

I think his product is a reflection of the man that he is.

I believe that his comprehension of GCA surrounds what he believes "the people" will want. I can tell you based on the success of his courses, that he has a good understanding of that.

Intellectually he seemed engaged and genuine.

I quite liked the man.

Mr. Trump has definate ideas on reality that you or I will not influence. (there is no such thing as bad press) He was quite gracious. The world around him takes it on his terms.  He does believe in a first class experience.

I dont believe most people can handle the developer mentality, but he is definately not an idiot. Don't underestimate him.

I was walking through the Trump Tower with my son when we crossed paths.  He was very friendly and more handsome than I had imagined.

Is the Bedminister the best courses Trump has done in the States?

The "old" course at Bedminster was a course that Trump inherited, not one he built from scratch.

The "new" course he built from scratch.

Rumor has it that he'd like to build a third course if he can acquire some additional land.

he was sat behind me at a NY Rangers game. Another member of the crowd approached him to say thank you for his charity work with a local organisation that he was involved with. DT was very gracious and appreciative. Other than that he rarely smilled or got excited but maybe hockey is not his thing.

He had a few security chaps who tried to stop others leaving their seats so he could get out which was a bit irritating to me but i don't know what its like to be very famous and having loads of people clammering for a picture or a signature. In between periods in the lounge he had loads of people asking for picutres and autographs and i think he accomodated as many of them as he could.

Overall he appeared to be just like the person i expected him to be. Very serious and all business and careful of his image. i was not able to study his hair.

He left before the 3rd period and some members of his NJ golf club took his seats and were telling stories amongst each other, one of which involved them saying (on the subject of the wind farm issues in scotland) that DT "only wanted the golf course in scotland, he is not bothered about whether he builds the rest or not and this gives him an excuse". I have no idea if this is true or not but it would be a shame if it does turn out that way in Scotland, for this or other reasons.

Steve,

I've played it a number of times.

I find the green to tee walks a little disconcerting, but, there are alot of good holes.
It's a nice course.

Do I prefer it to Mountain Ridge, Hollywood, Essex County, Ridgewood or The Knoll ?
No, but, it's an enjoyable play for many.

Will,

I've met him on dozens of occasions over the last decade or so.

Mostly at golf courses, his and others, but also at non-golf sites.

One of my dearest friends for the last 40+ years was a 50-50 partner of his in a major joint venture that my friend ended up controlling.

As pleasant as he's been to me, he's been really very nice to my youngest son, going out of his way to engage him in conversation and making him feel comfortable every time he's met him.   Those are things you don't forget.

Agreed.  I perceive him to be genuine in his love of the game...just overbearing in his self-promotion.  And his continuing "birther" status! :'(

And while, from pics of his Aberdeen course, my eye sees a few opportunities for very natural and fascinating fairway features lost, it still looks quite the track.

Cheers

Will,

I think he loves golf as most of us do.

As to self promotion, that helped get him to where he is.
Can it be grating ?  Sure, but I think he has a public and a private persona, one for the cameras and one for those he comes into personal contact with.
