Very sad news about Jim Goby.
« on: May 31, 2012, 04:25:49 PM »
Craig Disher sent the following
I never thought I'd have to write this but Jim Goby passed away after a
3-month battle with lung cancer. The indomitable man that he was, he
fought it until he couldn't fight anymore. He was a great and true friend.

Craig

There’s an old saying that Golf quickly reveals a person’s character, I only got to play with him a few times but what a great impression Jim left on me.

I was introduced to Jim on the first  tee at Hoylake, where someone had the great idea of putting us together for my first ever game of foursomes.  He quietly advised me not to worry and that on no account was I ever to say “sorry” to my foursomes partner. About three holes from the end of the match he said that his neck had seized up but that he would play on, just don’t mention it. Well we held on for a draw against the battling McBride’s. His neck was bad enough to prevent him from playing the next morning but he had hidden it from our opponents.

Keen to play with him again, next Buda I asked for him to be my partner and at Alwoodley we prevailed.  I’ like to say we never lost together but sadly I played poorly when we were paired together at Liphook last year and we did lose. However as tee times were tight on the final day the single matches took place as two separate games played concurrently with four teeing off. I got to watch Jim play the African Animal. Whoever arranged that one shared Jim’s sense of humour, one of the longest against one of shortee hitters in a match. On the Par 5, 13th Phillip hit a majestic second shot over the pin for a two putt birdie and (I believe) the hole.  Jim had played his 3rd from 165 yards; short of the stream.  However it was all square on the 17th tee where I figured a 158 yard par 3 might go to my team, but unfortunately Jim found the gulley on the right of the green and couldn’t get up and down. We all walked to the 18th for another Par 5 playing strongly uphill with Jim one down . If Jim was at all daunted he didn’t show it and held his nerve to win the hole for a half that pleased him no end.

I can’t think of anyone I’ve ever played with who competed so hard while retaining his calmness and sense of humour and was always fun to be with.

I only spent enough time with him to realise there must be lots and lots I don’t know about him. He was born in the North of England and work took him south.  We once drifted on to the subject of Rugby and he let slip that he had played scrum half for Hull Kingston Rovers, one of the elite Rugby League teams.  That’s one tough game and when you think of some of the opponents he took down, well it sums him up.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hull_Kingston_Rovers

He was immensely proud of Littlestone and Kent golf in general.  He loved how his home greens could confound the pro’s in Open Qualifying.  I believe he served on many county committee’s.

A  devoted family man, my attempts to accept his offers  between BUDA’s regrettably failed because he reserved his weekend’s for the most important people in his life and foolishly I didn’t set aside a day’s holiday to see him. He left the Deal Dinner early because he had promised to collect his wife from Babysitting. I hope everyone realises the bottles of Port passed round that evening had been an unannounced gift from a man who’d already gone home.
A loving family and friends like Craig and Peter must be feeling his loss dreadfully.  I can only feel thanks for the time Jim shared with me.

At Alwoodley when he saw the 17th flagstick he asked me to take a picture becausee it might amuse a few people on the website.

RIP Jim.

I have met many lovely people through this website but no-one nicer than Jim Goby.  No-one more competitive, either.  Didn't he finish his singles match in the Deal BUDA par-par-birdie-birdie?  A lovely man, a true sportsman.  I didn't know him well but will miss him.  Those who did will miss him more.  Very sad news indeed.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Thanks for sharing those stories, Tony. He sounds like the type of person who received with a hearty "Well done" from those who passed earlier.

Oh no sorry to hear this sad news - a massive loss to GCA / BUDA

I had the privelege of playing with this amazing 'quiet' and 'highly competitive' man who was 'bigger' than he actually was.

Prior to meeting at Hankley Common last September Peter Mallelieu announced that I was playing foursomes with Jim Goby as I went to the first tee I could not find him at first and he was actually beside me almost a foot shorter wearing a sleevless red jumper with Littlestone Golf Club logo (a club he was very proud of) with shorts and white knee high socks. I was not sure what was going to happen - Jim said to me 'Ill take odd you take even' with steely determination.

We were up against Drinkin' Joe and Lynn Shackleford. Joe hit first just off the fairway. I was unsure whether we could reach the green in 2?? Then...... I saw his practice swing, this guy was in his late 70's and cor blimey he swang the club like a 30 something and I thought 'wow!'. Jim hit his opening drive more than 200 yards with ease and at that time I was really impressed!

We all found Jim was a serious competitor he refused to give away a 3ft putt and in the end Joe missed which proved Jim right and we proceeded to win the game.

When I heard the final singles pairing the Animal vs the wee man. I thought it would not be surprising if he was there and therebouts. Walking down the sixth and seeing Jim and Phillip walking up the 5th the drives were 100 yards in difference and Jim was on the fairway and Mr Gawith in the heather. I was witnessing GCA's version of the tortoise against the hare. At the end I was so pleased to hear Jim half and I could see in his face that he was slightly disappointed not to win.

Jim had the shortest ever putter (even shorter than Robert Garrigus!!) it was about 21inches long with a big thick grip!

Rugby League when Jim played was one of the most roughest team sports even though scrums were contested then (not now) the smallest guy in the current Super League is Rob Burrow at 5ft 5! Jim was 5ft 1!!!!!! I would have loved to see him play and I could imagine he was hard as nails!

I had warned Boony how good Jim was before he went to Littlestone - Boony came back and said he was awesome + would not like to be up against him.

Rest in peace Wee Jim and thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

Moments like this makes me realise that life is 'richer' having met someone like Jim Goby.

Tough is the word that comes to mind with Jim.  I could tell he was quite proud of Littlestone, his family and his rugby background.  He explained a lot about foursomes to me when I indicated that this was a completely new game.  Gentle and considerate, but one who didn't give an inch in a golf match.  I liked him a lot.  Very sad to hear this.

It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.

I was envious of his quick wit; he was so good with the quick retorts at which the English excel. Which is to say: he gave better than he got, was a BUDA stalwart, and if our small band misses him I can only imagine the loss felt by Craig, his family and Littlestone.

A very sad day.

My thoughts to Craig and Peter and all Jim's other mates. I really enjoyed spending a few days with him at Buda '09 and I can imagine how much they must be missing him right now.

I am so saddened to hear this.  He gave every appearance of being hale and hearty when I saw him last at Littlestone In September.  He couldn't play that post-Buda day but made it a point to park his car out by the 15th green and greet us on our way home.  It was just like Jim to do that, he loved being with his friends and his friends loved every minute with him.

Some of my fondest memories of golf in the UK were shared with Jim Goby.   He will be missed by so many.   I will send this on to my son David, who enjoyed meeting and playing against Jim a great deal.  He's on the vertically challenged side himself, and really admired how Jim played golf.

RIP Jim Goby, a model for us all.   The folks at Littlestone are really going to miss him.  Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

Tony and Craig,

Thanks for letting us all know this very sad news.

I met Jim for the first time at last years Buda and though we didn't play together then, he did invite me for a round at Littlestone when I was that way a few weeks later. I very much enjoyed the round and Jim was both great company as well as a tough opponent!

It's a real shame I wont be able to get to know him better over the next few Budas as I was certainly looking forward to. Rest in Peace Jim!

I nearly missed this sad news. I can't add a lot to what people have aleady said - Jim had a lovely dry sense of humour and was great company on and off the course.A true gentleman who will be missed.

This is terribly sad news.  Jim was a lovely, gentle fellow and I enjoyed meeting him at Littlestone and last years BUDA Cup.  I was watching from behind the 18th green at Liphook as he won the final hole against Philip to halve his match.  I think he was rather pleased about that, but was far too much of a gent to show it.
I'm sure his family and close friends will miss him a great deal.

Very sad to hear this. I was paired with Craig Disher in Liphook in the match against Tony Muldoon and Jim Goby. He was unflappable and very competetive, a real golfer.
