High Volume Golf at The Villages in Florida...
« on: May 28, 2012, 12:56:16 PM »
Leigh Montville wrote a lengthy article that appeared in April 9, 2012 issue of Golf World. It was never posted online.Dan Hermann's recent thread on clubs with few rounds surviving got me thinking about this article so here is a prime example of the opposite:

Located about an hour north of Orlando with about 87,000 residents now. From the article:

The number at the moment-but check back
tomorrow because the number always is changing-
is 504 holes of golf. There are 10 country
clubs in The Villages, seven of them currently
with 27 holes, three with 18.There are 29 executive,
nine-hole courses.
The local boast is that there is more available municipal
golf here than anywhere else in the world. Some place in
China, Mission Hills, supposedly is a distant second. More
than 2.5million rounds were played last year. A guesstimated
5,810,493golf balls were lost in those 2.5million
rounds. Tee to green, there are 84 miles of fairways. There
are upward of 10,000 golfers per day.
"We think we have the most sophisticated tee-time system
in the world," says Ken Creely, director of country-club
operations. "You can call a number and someone will punch
in the information for you, or everything's on computers
and our website."
A step-by-step investigation of how much golf can be
played in The Villages in a limited amount of time was
made earlier this year. An expansion in the next two years
is slated to add two new championship courses, 27 holes
apiece, and six more executive courses for a closeout total
of 621 holes that will be available for the proposed closeout
total of 110,000 Villages residents.

Other than the Palmer/Lopez course, who are the architects doing the work there?

I think that much of what's there was done by Clifton Ezell, & Clifton.

Tens of thousands of folks love it there, but I'd sell my clubs and quit the game if it was the only place I could play, and I'm not speaking about the GCA.

The parents of an old colleague live down there.  I was told that they love the place and the (using his words) great, cheap golf.

It's quite an operation. There are several ''Downtown Squares'', lots of restaurants, free music every evening in the square, all kinds of sports fields, hospital, etc., etc.. The development was tiny in '79, but but they'll be adding their own exit off the Florida turnpike. I have friends who live there and they love it. My particular taste is not for living in a home that not only looks like my neighbor's, but is only 15' away from his.

In the high season all the golf on the 'big' courses is by shotgun, and you have to 'place your order' many days in advance. Golf on the execs is free for homeowners.

It's a factory.

I heard there were a lot of cases of STD's at the Villages a few years ago.

I remember that, it was because of two things. First, no old man is going to go to the store and buy condoms, those things are expensive.  Second gum jobs transmit germs and disease easier than teeth.

I new low has been established without even trashing the golf designs. And they deserve trashing. i am glad the place is a huge economic success. I payed the Palmer and one other course there. They were nothing special at all.

At least unwanted pregnancy wasn't going to be an issue.

I've got a friend who used to be in sales at The Villages, he made a killing off the place. Also had some funny stories about getting hit on by Aunt Bee.

Getting back to golf, here's more from the article:

"How many holes-in-one do you think we
had last year in The Villages?" asks Erik
Greulach, assistant director of country club
operations for the entire town.
"Six?" you reply. "Seven?"
"We had 1,832holes-in-one in 2011,"Greulach says.
"That's up from 1,630 in 2010. Every Thursday in the newspaper,
The Villages Daily Sun, they print all the names of
the people who made holes-in-one. That's about 35 names
per week. They also print the names of anyone who made an eagle or a double eagle and anyone who shot
their age or below. Two people had double eagles
last year, up from one a year ago, and 316people
shot at or below their age a total of 1,500 times."

I must be one of the elders here. Just wait is all I can say.

At my "active adult" community in AZ, the saying is that midnight is 9pm.  ;D

Fairly certain The Villages won't be hosting any Hundred Hole Hike events anytime soon.
