Looking for Panelists
« on: June 13, 2003, 11:14:13 AM »
During the US Open telecast Thursday, Roger Maltbie and Johnny Miller expressed uncertainty over which of Olympia Fields' holes is the signature hole (and just as importantly, which were the front and back nine signature holes).

It seems now is the time to start a new panel to help these commentators to better identify signature holes. I proposed the idea a few years ago to little acclaim, but times have changed. Now that pervasive marketing and inane television commentators are a way of life, it’s time to pander to the lowest common denominator by announcing the formation of The American Society of Signature Hole Committees (ASSHCom).

The ASSHCom panelist will work at his/her own expense. We reserve the right to charge you $100 to build a website that we reserve the right to actually put online. We also reserve the right to require that you come to our occasional gatherings so that the organization can profit off of the panel while showcasing premier signature resort destinations who will advertise in our publication, Signature Journal.  We also reserve the right to require panelists to pen articles about their favorite signature holes for the journal.

Panelists will be asked to vote on each course's premier signature hole, championship signature, front nine signature, back nine signature, waterscape signature and overall signature hole. The courses in question will pay for the privilege of certification, with small signs sent to commemorate the various signature holes as selected by our team of historians, well-traveled low-handicappers, television commentators and golf writers.

Please email me if you wish to sign up. :)

This sounds great!  Maybe we could Fazio to do a piece on waterfalls on a classical course.

I'm sure the Faz would defer to the undisputed "King of Waterscapes", Ted Robinson.

Geoff,

What a man!!

Could we perhaps add a couple of other criteria to you excellent thread.

1. Badly signed Signature Hole (the one where its hardest to find the tee)
2. 'Most like every other signature hole' signature hole
3. 'Most water and ornate bunker' signature hole

They could even produce a calendar, a 12-month version that depicts the "ASSH-Hole" of the month.  Maybe even a daily desktop version too!

They could sign up Preparation H to be the lead sponsor ...  ;D

Along with the picture Scott, you need "Best quote about signature hole/course from Signature Name Architect."

This is by far the finest property I have worked on yet.....

I don't know how I would ever have been able to look into the past with any degree of pleasure or enjoy the present with any degree of contentment if it had not been for the extraordinary influence the game of golf has had upon my welfare.

Like Tour 18, Golden Ocala and Bear's Best how about The Best 18 Signature Holes!  Each hole would have the architect's name in flashing neon behind the hole...

Or how about The Best 18 Clubhouses!  No golf, we'd just build replicas of the 18 Best Clubhouses and people would pay to tour through them...

Or 18 best 1/2-way houses...

Or 18 best ball washers...

Or 18 best parking lots...

While "signature hole" is one of the overdone cliches in discussing architecture, I think the comment does point towards a feature of Olympia Fields - there isn't a lot of differentiation between the holes, especially the par 4's.  If I described seeing a competitor play the hole "where you tee off through a chute of trees, to a fairway bunkered on both sides around the 280-300 range, then to a green which slopes back to front, and is bunkered on both sides," I've described about 12 holes at Olympia Fields.  There really aren't a lot of diagonal carries, or hazards that occur in unusual locations, or greens with memorable contours.

I think the term "signature hole" is pretty silly.  However, I disagree with John when he says

>I think the comment does point towards a feature of Olympia Fields - there isn't a lot of differentiation between the holes, especially the par 4's

that's just not true.  Anyone who has visited there can tell you that OFCC has two of the finest par 4's ANYWHERE the 3rd (Open 12th) and the 14th (Open 5th).

Paul Richards:

I'm inclined to agree with John McMillan that something seems to be lacking at Olympia Fields. Nothing grabs my attention enough to say "Tim, you just have to go see it". I can't recall that happening with a major championship course before.

Funny thing: it may well turn out to be a great tournament, but just not that appealing for golf architecture fans.

I didn't hear the signature hole comment but do wonder if Johnny Miller as super golf analyst has gotten a bit old.

Paul Richards -

The Open 12th certainly seems a difficult hole, especially with the uphill second shot.  I'm not sure that makes it one of the finest par 4's ANYWHERE.

However, if I grant your point on the Open 12'th and 5th holes, that still leaves 10 of the remaining 12 par 4 holes.  Are these holes distinct in your mind?  I know the difference between the 8th and 16th holes at Pebble Beach.  I know the difference between the 14th and 15th holes at Oakland Hills.  I know the difference between the 17th and 18th at Oakmont.  I know the difference between the 11th and 14th at Augusta National.  Which par 4's at Olympia Fields stand out in your memory as having different strategic features?

How about "Best signature hole" on a "championship LINKS style course" located more than 1000 miles from an ocean?

Of course, this course should never allow walking either...

Since we are talking SH's here, why not confine the panellists to crack photographic analysts, of whom we have many on this site.  Have the courses send them their best photties of their SHs, have the panellists take a look at the pics, do some mumbo jumbo, fill in a form, and Bob's your uncle, we have a new set of course rankings that we can argue about endlessly!

The signature hole is always the 19th. The goal is to win twice as much at dice as you lost on the course, thereby causing your competitor to write his signature on the check.
