Some images from the Yale Golf Club

Not to be confused with The Golf Club At Yale*. That would be an entire expose of the tragedy that is taking place.

(*true--YGC is currently trying to boulster its image by renaming it "The Golf Club At Yale" But it should also add, "Brought to you by Roger Rulewich Design Partners, and the Yale Conservancy of Bad Taste and Buearucratic Insight.")

Great stuff - thanks, Tommy.

Who are the individuals in the first pic?  Looks like the inimitable Dr. Childs walking with bag on left shoulder in the first one, but hard to tell.... just curious.

And that pic of the 18th, while very cool, just doesn't give the full majesty and glory to that freakin' huge hill.  Not your fault, Tommy - no one could capture that. That hill is BIG.  Scene of one of the great golf regrets of my life also... after taking 15 holes to warm up and costing my poor beleagured partner Paul Turner mucho dolares in the process, I started to play halfway decently from 16 on and in fact on 18 got a drive right to the base of that mountain from the back tees... GC was all excited to see what might happen if one got their 2nd shot over the mountain... which was possible... except choking Huckaby chunked it into the hill and all was lost.

Damn I love that hole.  Yeah, it would be really cool if the old greenside bunkering was restored, but I sure can look beyond that, because one ought not to get in those bunkers anyway - the green was and is huge - and the shots leading up to that are so damn fun.

Yes Tom, it is I. Notice one of the few realistic birdie putts I had that day from front left plateau down the valley and up to the back right plateau ::) .  I admit that is a fun putt.  Actually I had a much better one of similar length at Forsgate last week.  Its a much more dramatic double plateau green (also in far better shape).

Ahh- now I see my one actual realistic (not that I made it) birdie putt on eden (#15).

GC - I'd recognize that strong gait anywhere.

That is one hell of a putt!

TN,

If you like Yale, you should really check out Cavalier Golf & Yacht Club in VA Beach.  Pictures should be on my website soon, or you can call my office and ask Shannon to e-mail them.  It has Banks originals such as:

Alps (#2)
Cardinal (Long, #4)
Biarritz (#5)
Punchbowl (#6)
Maiden (#7)
Short (#8)
Valley (#9)
Eden (#11)
Narrows (#13)
Road (#14)
Plateau (#16)
Cape (#17)
Redan (#18)

It is truly unique!  And all on 100 acres.

Lester:

I'm not familiar with Cavalier. Is this a new course?

Also, I'm dying to hear about how you manged to build it on 100 acres. Can you share any background on how this was accomplished? How long is it? Did legal folks have any concerns about spacing?

Tim,
FYI, I believe that Scott featured Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club in one of the AOTDs if the past couple of weeks.

Cheers,

Not a new course.  It's a Charles Banks design that Lester restored.   Last Monday was the 'grand re-opening' of Cavalier, also known as Media Day.  Part of reason it's on 100 acres is that it's just 6100 yards long.  It was also AOTD #359 a week ago:

Tim,

Cavalier Golf & Yacht was originally developed for the Cavalier Hotel as a "sporty" resort course in 1929.  Designed  and built by Charles Banks, it opened for play in the height of the depression.  It is surrounded by "Birdneck Point" subdivision and is adjacent to Linkhorn Bay.  I did a fairly strict restoration of the course which reopened for play last week.  Since I did minor adjustments (tees) and moved no greens, we feel okay about the safety aspects.  The course is 6,150 yards long, Par 69, and really strong.  Former PGA Tour player and commentator Robert Wrenn called me after playing it and was extremely impressed.  He said he could play there everyday because it offered him every aspect of shot-making he could think of.

Scott Burroughs featured it recently in AOTD but it was the old photograph.

Scott:

Thanks for the link to the aerial. I'm not surprised nobody could guess as I've never heard of the place.

Lester:

Thanks for the background. Cavalier sounds interesting. I'm wondering why we haven't heard about it before and if I'm ever in that neck of the woods, I'd like to check it out.

Yes, Riverfront and Cavalier sounds like a good day in Hampton Roads.
