I prefer to say worthy of note than try to choose my best 5-50 courses, because it’s difficult to define ones best. My desires and passions change not just with time but can depend upon the day, the courses, the weather, those on the course or my own performance. Other criteria may also surface, but the basic of choice should be on the course and general GCA

Group A 1850-1899;
Group B 1900-1949;
Group  C 1950-1999

Lists to comprise your choice based upon your own preferences and experiences. They can be located anywhere in the world or just in your own region. Also if you can bring yourself give a reason of Note for your choice that may explain the courses you enjoy more than others.

Melvyn, all the best with this thread, but I do wonder if participation will be even higher if you limited it to say 10 courses for each group.

Joe

Put in the numbers that you wish,but those worthy of Note, be they just 2, 10 or 50.

Melvyn, can the Old Course be included in A?  Or North Berwick?

Bill

Do not see why not, TOC can be defined as modified between 1850-1899 same with NB West Links which again was extended in 1877

Melvyn,

A wise man once said:

Quote
Lists of the Top Ten Clubs, The Best Ever Clubs and Courses Lists are to be banned as down to hearsay and the fickle fate of Mans tastes.

and

Perhaps that just proves how useless the rating/lists are.

and

Perhaps in time Members may realise that GCA has little to do if anything with rankings or rating lists.

I do not see myself changing now ... how can you condone these lists.

and... well you get the idea! ;D

Wonderful things, lists. Welcome to the dark side! ;)

You must spend hours researching past comments, what a pity you do not have the character to invest that effort into the history of golf or GCA, then you might finally add something of interest and worthy of Note.

The key line in my question was the first line which reads as follows “I prefer to say worthy of note than try to choose my best 5-50 courses, because it’s difficult to define ones best.”

There are courses out there that cannot be defined as great but have some worthy qualities that makes them fun and enjoyable to play. They may not challenge ones game but certainly intriguing to ones senses.

The intention behind my question was not a list of courses but which were noteworthy to each Member of GCA that went beyond just playing the game. That’s something that you appear not to be able to grasp preferring to spend your time checking on what other Members have said in the past.

This brings me onto another point I mentioned in my introduction to my question “My desires and passions change not just with time but can depend upon the day, the courses, the weather, those on the course or my own performance”. For me that proves that list of preferred courses and the constant argument that they cause is better than this or that is, IMHO next to futile, yet taking points of Note, that which attracts each golfer to a Hole or Course is worthy of seeking as it may well have an interesting connotation re Design & GCA in general.

The times zones were to see it repeated features may or may not appear in each era, adding further points of interest in further GCA discussions.

However, perhaps my question was a question too far. That we have been absorbed in these pointless marketing lists too long, to the point that they have FA to do with GCA, but mine does. Probably why it has not generated any real response.

Points of Note, I believe has a serious basis in GCA while rating lists are prone to a player’s whim.

I still hold fast on Rating Lists and listings as pointless serving only to raise questions on marketing not on the game or the GCA. Many love Troon, I find it disappointing. Then we have Wentworh, may be worthy of some praise by some, I find it a course trying with difficulty to define itself as a golf course. One Man’s meat can be another’s Man’s poison, while points of Note may cut through the mist to identify real GCA features.

No Scott, I will never get you, nor do I want to try, there is indeed something of 'The Night About You'.

Pity you forget why Ran started this site on GCA but as I mentioned before Rating Lists are marketing tools and have FA to do with GCA. If you check your records you may find that has been my complaint from the start. Like PR voting it is the product of the lowest common denominator, so what comes to the surface is not always the cream
