Recently on GW's Top 100 Classic list, GM's Top 100 You Can
Play, and GD's old Top 75 Affordable.

"Affordable" is a bit of stretch, considering big bucks need to
be spent to stay at one affiliated Lodge first.  Otherwise is
mostly private.

Got it.  How cool a place is this?  

For those of you who keep a list, this one is pretty close to AOTD #247.  One local once told me that the money in this village is "so old that it smells."  

Scott, after it is all said and done, I would love to know how you captured this one, because I couldn't get it on mapquest.

BTW, that is the driving range accross the street. This archie is famous for routing on not much area!!

Ahhh, so it is. My mapquest skills are
not very good I have to admit.  

This course is known as one of the archie's
better designs.  Especially in this state where
he has quite a few!!!

This is Linville GC, in Linville, NC, designed by Donald Ross.  
Linville is associated with the Eseeola Lodge (min $325 a
night) and in the middle of a number of summer retreat
courses (Grandfather, Linville Ridge, Blowing Rock, etc.) in
the northern mountains of NC.  

In the past, Linville was a summer retreat of Bobby Jones
and President Eisenhower (before the lodge?).

For some reason I always thought that Bob Jones
summered in Highlands, N.C.  I have heard before that he
had a house on the Highlands C.C. golf course.  Did he
spend time in both?

I'm a little confused myself, as Ran has Highlands listed as a Jones retreat.  

I've heard from other places about Linville, such as here:

...but Highlands makes more sense for Jones, as it's a lot
closer to Atlanta and is stictly private.  If Jones visited
Linville once, then he "summered there", according to any
tourist mag.

That makes sense, Scott.  I don't doubt that Jones probably
visited Linville at some point in time; but Highlands seems to
be where I have always heard of him summering.  In fact, I
believe that I read somewhere that Jones' dad, the colonel,
was introduced to Highlands by an acquaintance from the
Atlanta Athletic Club (now East Lake), which in turn makes
sense because back in that time Highlands was known as
"Atlanta's weekend playground"; a place where the affluent
escaped the city to socialize in the mountains.  I have only
visited Highlands a couple of times, but to this day it appears
to still be a very quaint and expensive retreat.

FBD,

I've done 25 courses from England and Wales, which is 1.2%
of the ~2048 courses in the two countries, and the 340 from
the U.S. is 2% of the ~16743 U.S. courses (remaining 2 were
from Australia).  Considering the vast majority of regular
contributors on GCA are Americans (maybe 5 from
England?), I think the U.K. is getting it's fair share.  Also,
those 25 courses are 6.8% of all 367 courses shown.

If you can get me a free and easy way to get aerials in
Scotland and Ireland, send it on, please, but for now the only
one for a few small regions in Scotland is not easy to use.  As
for Australia, those were sent to me (one was a picture from
the clubhouse), and again, I don't know of any way to get
aerials otherwise.

There has been a recent development from north of our
border, however.  From Ian Andrew's (Mapquest) aerial of St.
George's (I think) to another who informed me about
Vancouver area coverage, there will be a week perhaps of
Canadian aerials some time in the future.  I doubt all of
Canada is covered, so courses like Highlands and
Banff/Jasper are probably not available.

Please remember another thing, FBD, I do this on my own
time (two little ones at home), for everyone's pleasure,
without pay, braving copyright laws, and against my wife's
wishes.  I've posted on a number occasions the websites
where I obtain these aerials, and you're free to go look for
courses on your own.
