Dave Pelz' backyard practice area
« on: May 16, 2012, 01:44:27 PM »

Anyone want to claim this one?

Two things...

1. It looks ridiculous and weird, but also like one would never get bored. There are SO many different shots to hit.

2. Did he really name his dog, Pedo? (See caption of photo #10.)

The green in the upper left looks like the #12 at Augusta - just flipped...

The only thing that would make this Pete Dye/Raynor monstrosity any uglier would be a biarritz green.

I don't know . . . a fake waterfall and some containment mounding might add to the ugliness.  Some long hikes between the features would help too, along with many more tee boxes.   I'll let you choose the architects.

Michael,

Wouldn't you agree that it would be a waste of time to practice week after week on artificial turf.  You have to have inconsistent lies, differing turf firmness and speed to develop any on course value.  This looks great for visitors or rubes who believe they can improve in a very short period.

Where is that?  It looks like Texas.

Are those little circles surrounded by a cirlce of sand supposed to be Tees?  Whatever they are, they look horrible.

The 17th at Sawgrass replica seems a little stupid.  It is not even close to the same size, but I guess if you are hitting 60 yards shot into it, it's fine.

I wouldn't mind watching Phil Mickelson for a couple hours around there.

That is truly awful.

How about a basic pitch or chip.
Looks like an add to sell 64 degree wedges

Matt I see 2 shots, a bunker shot and a high 64 shot.
unless you want to hit runups through the valley.
I would get bored very quickly and would not want to teach there.
Not enough basic bread and butter stuff, which is what the average guys needs to learn.

perhaps/surely the picture doesn't tell it all.

Wow, looks like his teaching academies are doing well in this economy!

Good for him, that looks like a fun place to have a party.

I agree, a fun place to play around.

It looks like something you would expect to see in Trump's backyard!  I despise practicing on turf, especially for your short game.  It certainly could be valuable to amateurs and pros if it were actual turf.

Since I pay enough for a nice vacation home in property taxes for .35 of an acre (I live in NJ), I'd take that backyard in about one second!

I really should be better at the 10 yard pitch shot.

My mama always said "Haters gonna hate."

How anyone on a board for golf lovers can find a way not to like something so cool is beyond me. Sure, it would stink if he tried to route 18 holes out of it, and it's not an architectural masterpiece or anything. But to practice? In your own backyard?

Put it this way: I'd trade him backyards.

Also, anyone that thinks Dave Pelz would only practice a 64 degree flop shot and bunker shots has never seen how thick his Short Game Bible is.

Except for the Sawgrass knockoff, I'd love to have it in my backyard.
