A week from Monday, the Independent School League will be playing in their year-end golf tournament at Wianno. I'm taking my team down on Sunday, when we will play a round at Kittansett before heading over to the Cape. Should be a great experience for my team.

The tournament is the only stroke-play event we'll play all season. Everything else is match play.

Can anyone provide any advice on Wianno? I know nothing about it other than that it is on the Cape and it's old. Each team only enters 5 players, and I have a mix of kids, some who hit it long, some who hit it straight, and really only one who hits it both long AND straight. So of those who have played Wianno, does the course favor the long hitter or the shorter but more accurate player? Given that it is stroke play, I'm inclined to go with the kids who can keep their ball in play and stay out of trouble.

We play at Newport tomorrow, played last week at Concord and next week at Belmont ... by the end of the spring the kids on my team will have had some pretty amazing exposure to great and varied architecture.

I haven't played Wianno in a few years, but I would say you don't need your long hitters, accuracy is more important there.  Mike Sweeney will probably chime in here, as he has a lot of experieince there.  The course is not long, has smallish greens and I wold call it "sporty".

with some great vistas from the course and the main clubhouse, which is a mile from the golf clubhouse. Not a hard core CGA.com place (Newport CC!!) but you will have a very fun day.

Front 9 was probably laid out by Ross, back 9 a few years later by one of his protege's. Think Merion West and Cape Arundel and you are on the right place. Have to say that at this exact moment, I would rather be in The Sea View room at Wianno for sunset over Nantucket Sound with a reservation at http://www.fivebaysbistro.com for a later dinner.  

Oh well, The Players and Chinese take out is okay too!

Thanks for the feedback, guys. Looking forward to checking it out. Glad to hear it is relatively short. I have a young team, and they can get intimidated watching how far some guys can hit it. In our very first match at Renaissance in Haverhill, the coaches jumped onto the course in a gap behind the #1s, and as we were putting on the 7th hole, a ball landed just short of the green. The hole that day was 350 yards, and it is really narrow with OB left and a steep drop (and almost certain lost ball) right. I've never even considered hitting driver. It's a 4-iron and wedge. And a kid in the group behind us (the #2s) damn near drove the green. Crazy.

I saw your post on the other thread. As Wianno plays pretty short at 6100, I am curious how it held up to high school golfers?

Held up really well. It was a wet week, so the course was soggy. But they were still able to play the ball down. Medalist shot a 69. My number 1, who went 16-1-1 in match play and was voted the Boston Globe All-Scholastic Player of the Year, shot a 73 after bogeying 3 of his last 4 holes. That put him in 5th.

There were some quirky holes out there. I think if the top 10 played it again, the scores might be lower. But all in all, it was a good challenge, and the Wianno staff were great to us.
