TPC Sawgrass vs PGA West Stadium
« on: May 10, 2012, 03:37:26 PM »
I know both have been discussed in all sorts of forums on here, but for those who have played both, what are the significant differences?  Which one is better?  How similar are they?  All the announcers rave about Sawgrass on TV, which isn't surprising with the PGA Tour influence in their marquee event, but somehow I get the feeling PGA West never got that much love.  Maybe it didn't deserve it, I don't know.  I haven't played either one, and was too young and wasn't all that into golf when the tour last played PGA West.  Just was curious being that we all will be seeing a lot of Sawgrass over the next 4 days.

There are moments that feel similar like 12, 17, and 18, and the stretch of 5-7 is watery, but there are plenty of holes that aren't similar, like the opening stretch.  I really enjoyed playing the course, but I did not enjoy the three-week bout with heat stroke and poisoning I got from walking it in 105 degree weather.  I drank a glass of ice water almost every hole, and when I got done I had to lie down with an ice pack on my head for two hours and was still sick/dizzy/getting weird headaches for three weeks.  If you go, and if it's close to 100 degrees or over, do everything you can to stay in the shade as much as possible and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.  Ask Dick Daley - heat poisoning is no joke.  In heat like that, there is nothing wrong with taking a cart simply for the shade and so you don't over-exert yourself.  Of course a twenty-something spring chicken is going to have it easier than a forty-year old lawyer, but either way, the heat in the desert in summer can get dangerous.

TPC Sawgrass is a great course with far too many ponds and unneeded water hazards. . It has many strong strategic holes. It has more interesting green complexes. They both have tons of horrible mounding and other issues which drive GCA types crazy. Yet, Sawgrass is good enough to get past it. PGAWest is a waste of time to play to me. I played it once and that was more than enough. I saw little to no redeeming qualities. I actually Found Doaks Stone Eagle course much more fun although over the top in places and LaQuinta Mountain to be much better courses in that area.

I really like the "horrible" mounding at Sawgrass. I guess I have poor taste  ::)
the interviewer asked beck how he felt "being the bob dylan of the 90's" and beck quitely responded "i actually feel more like the bon jovi of the 60's"

I think they are pretty similar.  PGA West is tougher if you miss the greens.
