Excellent :) Good job Matt, and nice playing Randy too.  Will we see either of them at the Travis or Anderson?

Congratulations Matt!  Randy Haag's blog gives some sense of how difficult the course must have played:

Congratulations Matt,

I knew you had it in you.

It was also nice to see our local Casey Boynes win the Masters.

Solid work, Sir C! Looking at those scores, I am even more amazed by the course record of 59 that was set around 10 years ago by a local mini-tour pro.

Well done Matt! That Stevinson is no pushover. A solid track for sure. Casey Boyns getting it done... score another one for the caddie ranks!

Cheers,

Congrats!  That 71 in the second round looks pretty damn good, 3 clear of the next best round of the day.

Thanks everyone. It was especially nice to pick up a new set of irons on Friday and win with them Saturday/Sunday.  ;D

Stevinson is a lot of fun for those of you who haven't been there. It really is in the middle of nowhere although it's only 2-2.5 hours from the Bay Area. It's just a really good golf course with excellent conditions and no iffy holes, and probably one of the better golf courses ever built on an absolutely dead flat piece of land.

Congratulations Matt!

Let me know when you are ready to give me a stroke a hole and play a GRUDGE(tm) match. Since you had such success with new clubs, your other option is to play out of my bag of new to you clubs.

Matt,

That's one he'll of an accomplishment.

Winning a State title is extremely difficult, especially in California.

Having your name on that trophy is something that no one can ever take away from you.

Your place in competitive golf history has clearly been established.

Good luck in future  tournaments

Congratulations Matt. I'm happy to see you have continued your competitive endeavors in golf. A win at that level in Calif. is quite an accomplishment given the number of sticks that inhabit the state.
Stevinson is one of my favorite lesser known courses. I love the angles that the course introduces, and you are absolutely right about how interesting that course is given the flat land is was laid out on. Not to mention that it was the site of Bill "Ace" McBride's hole in one on #16 during the King's Putter a few years back. Anyone who has played Stevinson will know what an accomplishment an ace there is.
What is your next competition Matt?

Saw that Matt got through local qualifying for the US Open at Pasatiempo today.  Had a buddy try to qualify there, haven't talked to him about it though.  How tough was it playing?  A 71 out there is damn good no matter what.  Congrats, good luck at Sectionals.

Thanks for noticing Keith. Yes, I'm excited and exhausted as I've just finished four days in a row of competitive golf - the first three at Spyglass and today at Pasatiempo. I've been looking forward to this four day stretch for a long time and it's really cool to end it on a high note. Who knows when I'll ever get to play two better courses back to back, and Spyglass is on my very short list of favorite places.

Today gets me into sectional qualifying at Lake Merced, another place I have a lot of affection for. I really wanted today because sectional qualifying and the Open itself are both in my very own city. I suppose that qualifies as once in a lifetime, maybe twice.

Almost 7 hours later I'm still unwinding from a 5-for-2 playoff on #1 at Pasatiempo. To say I was quite anxious would be a solid understatement. Luckily, for me at least, none of the other guys played the hole well. I hit the green on my second shot and I was the only guy within 40 yards of the green in two shots; two guys had lost balls left and another made double bogey from #9 fairway. But I'm proud of making a solid 4 on that hole into the wind and under those circumstances.

I have to admit being a liiiiiitle less amazed by Pasatiempo than I expected? Maybe it's because I only walked it yesterday (when the hole locations were already marked) and played it today, so I only ever considered one set of hole locations. But I guess I wasn't expecting so many shots that, while not necessarily easy, were somewhat obvious in terms of how to play them: the teeshots on 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 11, 12, and 17 in particular. I expected more strategy and angles. As well, the second shots on 4, 7, 12, and 17 in particular seemed kind of reduced because those holes play so much shorter now than when they were designed, at least for tournament players. For example, the pin on 17 today was +20 (on 47 out of 54) on the right side. With a 7 iron that would have been terrifying. With a wedge it just didn't feel like a big deal. I also felt like the narrowness of 6 and 7 detracted significantly from the front 9.

That said, 16 is an unbelievable hole and the green on 18 is pretty unreal as well. There's barely a pinnable spot on there.

As a minor side note, the Cal Mid-Am was more in name only and not official. It's always nice to win though.

And as a total side note, I spent 90 minutes with Mac O'Grady yesterday, which was...memorable.  :)

Way to go, Matt! Beating Randy "The Machine" Haag, is quite an accomplishment. :-)

Heard it was brutally windy one of the days....
