California Courses
« on: May 01, 2012, 12:59:00 AM »
This coming weekend my wife and I will be traveling to southern California for a few days to get in some golf and visit our son in L.A. (not necessarily in that order, priority-wise  ;)), and our plan is to fly into Monterey on Saturday evening, then spend 3 or 4 days in the area, a couple of days driving down to L.A. and a weekend visit with him, and then my wife and I will head over to Palm Springs for a short bit before flying home.

At the moment, I've arranged rounds at Monarch Dunes and Sand Piper on the drive down to L.A.

Courses I'm considering in the Monterey area include Pacific Grove on Sunday afternoon, Pasatiempo on Monday, and San Juan Oaks on Tuesday, then down the coast (and golfing at M.D. & S.P.) to L.A. for the weekend, and golfing with our son at Oak Quarry that Sunday afternoon, before driving into Palm Springs. Courses I'm considering there (we're only there 3 days) are Desert Willow - Firecliff and La Quinta Mountain.

I'm just wondering if anyone's played any of these courses in the last little while and if so, what conditions were like there. I'm assuming that all of these listed will be in good condition, but one never knows. And if anybody thinks I'm crazy for any of my choices I'm certainly interested in knowing why! For reference, I play to a 14 and my wife is a solid 35 (although she did shoot a career round of 94 at Wine Valley last August).

Thanks,
Jim

Oak Quarry was in pretty good shape last Tuesday. It's a solid cart ball course well worth $49 for those passing through, if more prestigious playing grounds are inaccessible.

If at all possible, don't miss Pasatiempo, Jim.

It's been a while since I played cypress ridge, but I would suggest that or rancho san marcos instead of the underwhelming monarch dunes.  watch out for poison oak at san juan oaks.  I still have scars from the case i got there.

Jim,

Why not play Rustic Canyon with your son instead?

I agree with both of these gentlemen.  I played Pasatiempo and Rustic two weeks ago.  Both are incredible and two of my favorites.  Pasatiempo was in great shape and Rustic was as hard as a rock (a lot of fun).  Play 36 at Pasatiempo, if you can.  You will definitely want another shot at those greens after seeing them once.

Jud, I was trying to line up a game there with Tommy and Geoff next Friday morning when we roll through that area but they're both headed up to the Bay Area for a fundraising tournament that weekend. So we changed our plans a bit and will spend a couple of days along the coast before heading to Laguna Beach for the weekend. We golfed at RC last year with Lynn and David Moriarty. Thoroughly enjoyed the course.

Jim,

Definitely play Pasatiempo.

Check out Ryan's link above, I just looked at Rustic Canyon, and they are aerating greens April 30 - May 2. This is important info when planning a golf trip, so be sure to look-up the courses on your itinerary.
