It's great to have KBM on board, hiking for a great cause. Maybe this will start a run of architects hiking on their own designs. Bueller?

While I'm not going to hike, I tried to fan the flames and generate interest in my weekly blog post for 2nd Swing.

Howard, that list is awesome!

I began my own personal list once I knew I was going on the hike...I am currently bouncing back between unbridled enthusiasm and fear about the task ahead in June...

It is going to be an amazing event...

Don't start touting the merits of minor league, I mean American League baseball again or you'll be relegated to only hiking hole #1 100 times...  8)

Hello all,

I know it's been said before in this thread, but I thought I'd bring it up again. For anyone out there looking for a reason to take a day/half-day off of work, you have a great excuse in helping out with one of the hikes as a caddie/forecaddie (or other volunteer of some kind).

I know our June 18th event at Flossmoor has grown to at least 12 guys, so we can't have too many caddies. Any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks...

Good luck to everyone.

When I am fully healed next year, I would love to do it next year.  For now, my support will solely be financial

Good luck.

Pujols hit his 2nd home run of the season on Thursday. Sounds like a perfectly good reason to celebrate.

What's that?  Baseball season has started?  Sorry, but with the Kings on their way to the Stanley Cup Finals, I must not have noticed.  ;D

And for the record, Pujols actually hit his 3rd homer today (2nd in two games).  15 more and he'll catch Hamilton!

This study is a bit old but it shows the calorie burn for various ways to get around the course:

The Physical Benefits of Walking when you Golf

Neil Wolkodoff, director of the Rose Center for Health and Sports Sciences in Denver, recently completed a study of these benefits at Inverness Golf Club in Denver, Co.

The Study

Wolkodoff found eight male volunteers, aged 26 to 61 with handicaps between 2 and 17, to participate in an experiment that would analyze energy consumption and scoring while playing several nine hole rounds of golf.

The participants wore equipment that measured such variables as heart rate, oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production and distance covered per round.

Each golfer then played nine holes at Inverness in several different formats:

1) Carrying a bag
2) Pushing a cart
3) With a caddie

Walkodoff found that over a 9 hole round:

- A Golfer burned an average of 721 calories carrying a bag
- A Golfer burned an average of 718 calories pushing a cart
- A Golfer burned an average of 613 calories using a caddy

So over an 18 hole round we can assume that:

Carrying = around 1,400 to 1,500 calories (108 holes = around 9,000 cals)
Push Cart = around 1,400 to 1,500 calories
Caddy = around 1,200 to 1,300 calories (108 holes = around 7,800 cals)

Another interesting element of the study was scoring:

Carrying = 90 avg
Caddie = 84 avg
Push Cart = 80 avg

I believe the course in question was rolling.

Obviously fitness, weight, etc. contribute to calorie burn so this is just directional.

Assuming an average walk of 7k yards total (which is probably low with green to tree transfers, chasing down errant shots and putting) a golfer playing 6 rounds in one day would walk about 24 miles.

interesting study Robb, which really surprised me.

I have generally found that push carts really only provide value on flatish courses.   On hilly courses, I probably expend more energy with a push cart vis a vis carrying.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think fitness has a thing to do with it.

The heavier man (or, of course, woman) burns more calories than the lighter man (ditto) walking the same distance, given the same rises and falls.

Dan,

Pretty sure fitness does have something to do with it. The body becomes more efficient with practice and this will impact calorie burn.

From everything I have read and experienced with endurance training weight does not perfectly correlate with calorie burn.

If one person walks at a lower heart rate because they have better fitness, they will burn fewer calories than another person who has a higher heart rate while walking.

There are many touching stories of the HHH hikers and the charities that they selected.

Meet Joe Aschacher, who selected the Kidney Cancer Association.  Joe is an 18-year-old who is hiking June 18 to honor his uncle, who passed away from kidney cancer just five days ago.

Howard, you should put your survival checklist on the site as a blog post for visitors who aren't GCA readers. Given the amazing success you, Sven and others have had at gaining celebrity re-tweets (Sam Jackson yesterday!) there's a lot of web traffic coming in from beyond the treehouse.

Good idea for a blog post. I'll write it up and shy away from focusing on the Cubs hat.  They're still winless since I created the list. Coincidence?  (Likely not...)

Indeed. Quite a coup...

Done! thanks!  let's see who can get most creative with their pledge!

- Most blisters
- Most changes into new pairs of TRUEs
- Most Body Glide applications
- Most friends/family/supporters on the course
- Golfer to be passed more times by other hikers
- Fewest bathroom breaks
- Fewest complaints
- Playing 100+ holes with the same ball
- Ability to recruit GCAers to serve as caddies (hint)
