Thanks for that, Brian.  I'll be up in St. Andrews on Friday, golfing and then trying to flog my books.  This one looks like something even I might wish to buy.

All the best

Found this thread in the archives and having read the book I thought I would make the following comments.

Memoirs of the Legendary 'The Ironman of St Andrews' by Joe Stine with introduction by Golf Historian, Gary Wiren PhD, is an excellent book to read and I believe may well be enjoyed by many on this site.

It’s has Spirit and it certainly takes you back to the early 19th Century, with the story based at St Andrews but with trips to the new 12 Holes course at Prestwick. Just finished the book and have written to Joe Stine with my compliments on an enjoyable story. I feel if you enjoyed Tommy's Honour you may well enjoy The Ironman of St Andrews.

I finished the book a week ago and concur with Melvyn. I feel like I learned a good bit about the culture and the role of golf within it from the book. Well done and an enjoyable real. The golf history is solidly done but almost secondary to the cultural history therein.
