Brandon,

Several years ago, before I was a member here, I had heard about these two new courses (at the time) in Bandon, OR.  On a trip from Spokane to the Bay area, I decided I would take Hwy 101 and stop in on the way and have a look, fully knowing I had neither the time nor money to play.

When I pulled in and saw the view from behind 18 green at Pac Dunes, it was like I had stepped on another planet.  I wandered around a bit and looked at the practice green, the 7th green and 8th tee..as well as looked at a few holes at BD. I had never seen, in person, golf like that before.  I vowed to get back there one day again to play it and I did.  I still need to get back and play all the rest of them now.

Kalen

Kalen,

This is my favorite story yet. Nowadays with so much information at our finger tips it is almost impossible to go in blind. What an unbelievable feeling I bet it was to see that kind of golf for the first time with no preconceived notions.

I hope I feel half that way when I get there for the first time.

This was preordained as a "no-golf" vacation.

Huh?   ???  I was lost from this point on in your post.

I was lost from the point where you said you were following your MLS team on a road trip.

My wife had a conference in San Francisco two weeks before the 2000 U.S. Open. I went with her. On Sunday we drove down to Pebble Beach to pick up some gifts for our babysitters. It was the last day that the course was open to the public before closing to get ready, and there were only 8 foursome going out that day. I asked if we could go out to the 18th green to take a picture, and was told that we could walk the entire course. We went down 18 to 17 green, checked out how deep that front bunker is, looked across at the elevation changes of 6 and 7, and then my wife said we neded to get back to the conference as there was some event that afternoon. I said we have a chance to walk the course but she wanted to be on time for the event. We argued. We left. It turned out that the "event" was just a cocktail party that most people skipped and those that came showed up near the end. I think we were the first ones there. Oh good. Much better than walking PB. My wife is still kicking herself over this, and when I mentioned this thread to her she immediately thought of this.  Me too. We are still married as it was her idea to go to the 1991 Ryder Cup at Kiawah as that was our 10th anniversary, but I have not forgotten this one.
