My cousin played for Holtz in the 80's, to this day he would take a bullet for Lou.

Sam:

I've heard the same thing from my friends.  His motivational style was a weird mix of fear, respect and amazement that anyone could be so odd.  Not sure how he was able to relate to his players, but they all say he was one of a kind as a coach.

Adrian if Sir Phillip Green were a golfer what would he bid? He just paid £100k for a dress worn by Kate Moss.

Mark - Those types of things have a tradeable value though so I dont think its related and at charity auctions the prices are often inflated several times true value because people like to donate, signed photograps of players go for say $200 when in truth if they are still alive a 10x8 is only worth $50. Like the ball itself it would probably make $10,000 at a specialised auction, it might be more but the true value would be about 10, someone paying more now might lose in 5-10 years. About £40,000 was the highest I could find that a 3-some 'charity voucher' made for round(s) at Augusta. I agree some people will be prepared to pay an inflated price for something, I was more thinking of a real common value to someone.

Perhaps it opens a thread "How much would you pay for a round at Augusta?"

I'd pay the member's guest fee and a suitable gift for the host.

Assuming you were not playing with a member but had a chance in an auction atmosphere what amount would you pay? I think that really is the issue. If you would not bid higher than what a guest fee would be then I would guess that you are not that enamored with the idea of playing at ANGC at a crazy price which is quite refreshing really.

The best deal to make would be to lend the ball to the club for a year. Each January, Mitchell would be able to negotiate something reasonable from the club. Maybe badges one year. Maybe golf one year. Don't get greedy, but try to let the club show its appreciation once a year.

Robert - Surely what your saying is being greedy... I think the real value of the ball is $10,000 the man took the rounds swap and saw it evens, some look at masters tickets for life as a good/fair/better deal.... you can value everything high or everything low or everything fair.

RW,

That's actually brilliant, the "lending program"...not only is it fair and allows the club a quiet piece of appreciation for a significant artifact, but its proportionate as this is exactly what ANGC does with CBS on renewable 1 year contracts...and the reason we do not have to endure "How I Met Your Mother" promos, besides the other limitations.

They could set a term for the leasing period as well, 20 years or something, at the end of a 20th such 1 year lease, the club pays the fair auction value of the ball and both parties are done.  Maybe two badges for the man's assignees.

Great thought though, with or without my addendums.

cheers

Someone will have to tell me how this ball is currently worth more than $5.

The guy made a great deal...he is going to receive an invaluable round or golf in exchange for a ball with no value...

Funny, I had the same thought: if I had gotten the ball, I'd have offered it to the club for exactly that, a round of golf. I don't think it's right to bargain for more and suspect it would not have gone down well with the club.

After all, I would want them to have it.

I suppose its no different to a rare stamp or coin that derives huge value from some form of uniqueness. What is trash to someone is very collectable to another. There is a big market in sports memoribillia. Art Walls 1959 Green jacket just made over $60,000.

I'd give them the ball. Plain and simple.

If they wanted to offer something in return, I'd accept.  To hold onto it and ask for something in return just doesn't seem right.

Tim - I'm not a man of means and would never pay over the odds to play golf. Anyhow playing would be great but you only get the true flavour of a club when you are hosted by a member.

Mark-As I said in my earlier post I admire your outlook. I also have to agree that the most fun to be had  and truest reflection of a club and it`s vibe would come as the guest of a member.
