Great pictures, although they were so focused on Hogan they didn't even catch any of his fellow competitors!

... or much of the golf course.

Who were the other Americans that competed that year?

his caddie Cecil Timms used to eat all of Hogan's snacks, so Ben started buying him his own snacks

I looked it up once (too lazy to do so again) but I think that Frank Stranahan was the only other US player of note to make the voyage across.

Great collection and while too young in 1953 to remember, it brings back my days in St Andrews from the mid 1950’s to the early 1960’s

Not a sign of spitting, swearing, club throwing or poor behaviour.  Now that was Golf.

Thanks Dean

Is anyone else struck by the lack of hay-like rough?

I am beginning to think we've lost our minds with rough and trees on golf courses.

FWIW, seeing the ratty fairways makes me feel warm and fuzzy--I am SO sick of my fellow American golfers who think that you can't play the ball down unless the turf looks like ANGC.

You must have glossed over the smoking pictures.  I'll take swearing or spitting over smoking any day of the week.

I like the sign that says, "Beware of pickpockets."  Don't recall seeing that on a golf course before.

Incredibly shallow bunkers on #18!  The thing which makes the biggest impression on me are the factories and other evidence of a lively town in the background.

Thanks for the pix Dean.

Wow - these are amazing pictures.  I'm a huge Hogan fan - picture #18 stands out for me - brings sort of a "humanness" to Hogan for me - he's clearly letting go of the club - guaranteed he meant to.

Also love #21 - I'm assuming that's regular member play going on during the Open....just after the last group.  Outstanding if it is...

Just really wonderful images. I'm still waiting for photos of bunker rakes to show up in championships, showing when they were placed out there during a round. That bunker Hogan was standing in looked pretty rugged. Rakes were used by the crew, but not sure when they were first left out on the course during a round. I doubt before WWII generally.

News flash. Hogan is signing autographs in photos 8 & 14. And the spectators are smiling like he said something!

Why is it that black and white photography seems so much more honest and dramatic than color?

How much better was golf spectating when they walked the fairways?

Here's a few more images of Mr. Hogan with that "strange" expression on his face.

Gentlemen,

Mike, I love the fact that there are a few "urchins" walking side by side with greatest golfer of the time in picture #16!
I keep returning to these pictures. I live vicariously.

So just for fun.......
As some of you know I wear, as a badge of honour, the fact that I sat on my mother's knee and actually saw Ben Hogan putting out on the final green.  Of course I cannot remember any of this but nonetheless it is true and a tale that sets the young guns here in Oz back on there heels when I relate it! I admitted I live vicariously!
In the picture below the house I lived in as a three year old (in 1953) was "Lismore"  on Links Parade, Canoustie. The house is circumscribed on the upper left and our Ben is on the green!

Now my question is am I the member on this board who has been closest to the The Wee Ice Mon or are there elders here who have actually met him and / or been in closer contact?

Yours pathetically,

Colin

Great pics!

Did these photos make the magazine? If so, which issue?

I just looked at the 7/20/53 issue and there are some good photos there as well that really emphasize the bad weather that week, but none of these are here.

I am late to this thread, but agree that the photographs are just terrfic.  I love the shots of the young boys following the play and Hogan's playful looks as he interacts with one of them.  Most of all, however, I'm just transfixed by the garb of the galleries.  Do they look natty or what?  It reminds me of the way people used to get dressed to get on an airplane.  Nowadays, everybody looks like a slob, and even the "patrons" at the Masters include a large number of poorly dressed dolts that look like they just got kicked off the local muni.
