While it was a warm short winter, B'side, which had Fescue spec'd when it opened, lost quite a bit of what was left, this winter. I keep hoping it isn't out of dormancy, but after today, it was likely winter kill. I'd assume, the wind was what did the trick. Likely drying out the crown? The most obvious spot is on the slope of the back bowl, on the Par 3 17th. It faces south southeast. Which is, and was the prevailing, most of the winter.

Someone might want to stop by soon and at least check it out.

Dick, That might be the reason, that direction, is a preferred corridor direction? As we have discussed many times.

Those contour lines are 10-foot intervals, so there are some big slopes, as in #17 fairway.

Those slopes on 17 appear to go sideways....kinda like #11 at Rock Creek in scale?

Scott,

Here is a pic from the start of the fairway:

And one from behind the green looking back:

Are there any similarities to #17 at Ballyneal?  Looks to have the sharp drop in the fairway from left to right.

Scott:

There is twice as much elevation change here, as on #17 at Ballyneal.  Plus, you are hitting up to the fairway at Dismal, so you can't see this slope from the tee.  We had a tee shot on the never-finished Wicked Pony that played up a sharp bank on a diagonal, like this one, but it was flat on top instead of coming back down the other side.

Tom,

Whatever became of the Pony?  It is pretty much dead or still on life support?

Can you post updated pictures?

I toured the course again last week.  It may be the widest course ever built, cept for the river that is.

I know what I want for lunch and dinner.
And the course looks awesome. At first glance, I was particularly drawn to the hole between the non vegetarian pics.

If you look at the top of each of these pictures you will see the most interesting bunker on the course which isn't on the course at all.

I saw that, John.  How far away is that bunker.  My instinct tells me that it looks like it is right up the hill but in reality it is a mile away.
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

Not sure how far it is but I'm currently in training to find out.

Have you checked to see if there are updated aerials on Google maps?

I'll bet TD could tell you how far away it is without even looking at a map.

Those pics are a few weeks old as the #2, #3, and #8 are all irrigated, and #6 and #7 are completely hydroseeded. The green complex in the pics that is hydroseeded (6th), is now covered with freshly sprouted grass.

John, - It is certainly not the widest course ever built... Its not even 2nd widest course in the sandhills!!! That honor belongs to both courses at the Prairie Club.

As Don said. #5,6 and 7 are seeded. 4 is 3/4 done and there is grass everywhere. If the damn wind would die down 2 more greens would be knocked out in a day.... I'm a little weary to put up some proper (non camera phone) pics after the last episode on #3 that left people asking "Where are the sandhills?... I dont see them" ;D

Oh, how we laughed.

Still, I remain hopeful of one day seeing the course. In support overcoming my blackballing I have -- quite incidentally -- obtained a character reference from CJ's old club-champ-winning caddie from Jackson Hole. So I got that going for me.

Are you saying you didn't think that was funny? I had wished you had seen and responded when I posted it because I really did think it was funny and thought a  laugh was needed. And what's with this talk of blackballing? You have a standing invitation from at least two DRC members who had hoped you'd find a way to make it work on your upcoming trip. As they say in Belgium -- Hakuna matata!

I only just saw it. I took a holiday on clicking on DR threads.

Your (and John Lyon's) generous invitations notwithstanding, the owner did say I as unwelcome.

But it turns out CJ's champs-winning caddie from his club in Jackson Hole is the marketing manager at my club in Sydney (13,000km away -- really, what are the odds?!) and maybe the divide isn't as wide as it may have seemed!

The big question is this: who plays what first? Me and DR from 14,000km away, or a certain Golf Digest panelist playing a publicly-accessible US Top 20 course within 2hrs drive of his home?! My money is on my good self!

Scott,
Blackballing and Dismal River just don't go together. Its not that kind of place. CJ and I had some disagreements early on in his time here at GCA, mainly me giving him a hard time for promoting his club. That didn't stop him from enlisting me to help build his new course. He has created a very nice vibe at DRC and I'll bet if you ever make it out there you'll end up being a fan of the course(s), the club, the region, and CJ.

Jaeger, please post some more pics of the freshly planted holes. They looked great in the raw state, but the hydromulch coating brings the contours alive, especially in photos.

PM me for my address and you can send me the $400 green fee.  Once it arrives, I'll promptly book my tee time.

Don,

I would make the same bet -- but CJ did in fairly certain terms say I was unwelcome at DR. That's cool, I am 29 and it's a long life (inshallah). I back myself making more than one trip to the prairie lands in my lifetime. Especially if Rus and I make a pilgrimage together...

JC -- you can split me the difference of me getting from Sydney to Mullen.

When you are in Mullen in a couple weeks, I'll gladly pop for the 17 miles worth of gas to get you from SH to DR.  Hell, I'd even send CJ a check for your greens fee.  One condition though, you'd have to take a picture of Mayhugh after he has hit a tee shot, while still in the follow through.

You are more than welcome to come out to Dismal River on your trip.  You are correct, Rus and I have quite a history together, and it would be great to see my old friend again.

PM or email me the details and I'll see if we have space.

CJ

Scott:

I'll miss his "Bones" McCoy references.  Guy knew hopw to crack me up in a tournament.  He had a brother and sister caddie as well, all the way from Mexico, Missouri.

We were the perfect team - back then, he couldn't read a green to save his life and I couldn't (still can't) hit a line with a grenade.
