Alex Miller's "Improve The Dud" Thread

In honor of Alejandro Miller's recent exclamation/interjection Give Me The Duds!

How do we improve a "dud" hole? Can a centerline bunker work that miracle? How about a seeing-eye bunker (that does not eliminate a runner to the left or right quarters/thirds) fronting the green? What about closely-mown chipping areas on the sides of the back? If funding is available, a rebuilt green with character?

A young teaching colleague relayed to me the story that 5s on AP language exams are born, while teachers help elevate 1s and 2s to 3s and 4s. I think that I agree, so I rerelay the story with relevance to this thread.

I'm in favor of any response that does not involve blow the dud up!

You would always get more out of building a cool green, than you would from adding a bunker.  But, building a new green is generally considered "blowing up" the hole, which is why adding bunkers is all the rage.

It is blowing up the hole in true Karl Spackler fashion, but my interpretation of blowing up the hole is complete annihilation of the tee, fairway and green.
