Look at the mound in photo # 4

That's an indicator of the long history of Garden City.   It also looks a lot like the cops at Hoylake (Royal Liverpool).

Good photos,

I have seen a very nice collection of B/W photo's of Garden City but never of what I believe are taken behind # 18 green, as a couple of these pictures depict.

A few years back the super and I went around the course marking mowing lines and doing some digging in the bunkers to check depth.  What we found was amazing, over time the depths of the bunkers have risen and you could tell by the different colors of sand added every so often with a sprinkling of silt in some locations.

The other item of interest for me was the cross bunker on 17, it looks way more pronounced in 1936  then what  it appears today.

Photo's and angles do distort the heights of mounds but the rolls in the greens are very noticeable.

Jim,

Agreed about the heights/depths.

Did you notice the abandoned, long trench bunker on the right side of # 7, not dissimilar from the long, active trench bunker on # 3 ?

Agreed,

Not dissimilar but when I tell people about trench bunkers they always give me the eye, what the hell is a trench bunker?

I also noticed that the photographer didn't venture to far away from the clubhouse.  It must have been a chore to carry the camera for a very long time.

This image was tagged as the 34th hole so I assume the 16th ???

Also, there were some other notables in attendance....

Chick Evans on the left.

Grantland Rice on the right.

Pat,

I've sent you two links to the image archive that I found. One of them has less than 20 images in it which were all tagged with captions. I am guessing that those images were the ones published by Life. The other link is to a bigger archive, probably between 100 to 200 images, which are not tagged. Almost all of my original post, except image #12 which seems to be #18 green, were not tagged.

Do those sandy/hillocky areas in the background of #s 7,8 & 9 still exist?

These pix look like something straight out of Park Jr and Fowler's play book - amazing.  Thanks for posting Dean.

Sean,

They do on # 1, however, grass has replaced sand in many areas on the golf course

Dean,

Thanks

Is anyone able to identify photos 11 and 15 and what angle they were taken from?  Thanks

As a small historical side-note, this 1936 US Amateur was famously one of the last major championships in which the stymie might be said to have played a determinant role, as Jack McLean would almost certainly have won the Final had he not been laid an absolutely impossible stymie by Johnny Fischer on the 35th green: ironically Fischer himself was knocked out of the (British) Amateur at Troon in 1938 by a dead stymie at the nineteenth hole.
