A love of lighthouses
« on: April 13, 2012, 05:24:03 PM »
The tour stop this week in Hilton Head is a reminder that I love lighthouses. Big ones. Short ones. Stout. Thin. Striped. Plain. Wood. Stone. Brick. This affinity of mine is rather new, developed the last 15 years in going to Nantucket and staring at wonderment at its three lighthouses.

Back to golf. Sure, the lighthouse that serves as a backdrop to #18 at Harbour Town was erected as an iconic image for the resort and not as an operable lighthouse to guide boats. Nevertheless, it and Turnberry's first come to mind among lighthouses adjacent to golf courses.

But what are some others? I cobbled together the start of a list. Welcome your additions.

You can see the Tarbatness Lighthouse across the Dornoch Firth while playing Royal Dornoch & Golspie.

The Chanory Point Lighthouse (that one sees across the Moray Firth while playing Castle Stuart) is adjacent to the 4th green & 5th tee of Fortrose & Rosemarkie GC.

Here is a photo of our proposed golf site on King Island in Tasmania.
It brushes against the Cape Wickham Lighthouse at the northern tip of the island and its the tallest lighthouse in the southern hemisphere. Its 55m high and just celebrated its 150th anniversary.

Howard:

There's a tall lighthouse which is part of the site for our project at Mulan Bay on Hainan Island; I'll try to get a picture when I'm there in June.  It looks more like the space needle than most of the lighthouses pictured so far ... our client has an architect working on a design to make it more attractive.  It stands 60 m high and is right behind the green of the 15th hole.

Gibbs Hill lighthouse is next door to the par three course at the Fairmont Southampton , Bermuda. We have a few courses here in Rhode Island with views of a lighthouse.

Thanks for this Howard. GCA used to have lots of these quirky little threads that added to our celebration of all things golf.  We need a collective name for all the things that add joy when out playing. All the ones Mucci claims aren't important. ;)

Burnham and Berrow does have a rather unusual lighthouse. You first see it on the drive to the club, but its inland quite a bit and surrounded by housing...

On the course, its most evident on the 445 yard home hole. Big hitters will sometimes try to cut the dogleg by aiming at the lighthouse from the tee!

And its very clear behind the clubhouse

The lighthouse forms the clubs logo and was also in the title of the clubs history book "Between the Church and the Lighthouse"

More about this unusual lighthouse can be found here

James

Thanks, all, for the great additions, photos and background on the lighthouses. Really wonderful.

Greg, is it possible to walk/drive up to the lighthouse adjacent to Cabo del Sol?

Tom, look forward to seeing a photo of the lighthouse near your Mulan Bay project.

Yes and no, it is actually on our property but you would have to cross land that you should not cross to get there. Here is the view from there.

The geographical pedant in me needs to point out that Bamburgh Castle is in England, not Scotland and the UK includes Scotland, the courses you have down as UK are all in England.

Is Bamburgh Castle unique in having views not only of a lighthouse but also 2 castles and an abbey?
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Quite a view of #17 and #18. I'll stay with the ground-level view.

I should have known I was going to botch that. Thx.

If you are ever in Bandon the Oregon coast has some very pretty lighthouses. My personal favorite is in Newport, it is called the Yaquina-Head lighthouse.

Wow, Wentworth by the Sea. Havent seen or heard that name in years. How is the course holding up? Any GCA reviews of it? Was our high school course for several years. Was great for match play. Any insight would be appreciated.

Not a course with a lighthouse per se, but I have always enjoyed the Links at Lighthouse Sound (an Arthur Hills design across the bay from Ocean City Maryland).

Thanks to Neil, Greg, Chris, Jim and Stephen for the additional photos of lighthouses. Be it those near a golf course or not --- quite a sight to behold.
