An architects start?

Kind of a cool story and maybe the beginning of a career in golf course architecture.

Ahh memories!  I will never forget the short course I would build at my parents house during my youth.  6 holes and all you needed was a sand wedge and a ball or two!

Hole 1 - The first was a tricky 72 yard opener, playing from an elevated tee over the edge of the house.  Anything long or right and you were in big trouble.

Hole 2 - This severely uphill 52 yarder required knowledge of the course and an accurate yardage, as only the flagstick is visible from the tee.

Hole 3 - This 48 yard, significantly downhill shot was a risk-reward hole.  Going for the green is an option, but better not come up short, or it's a lost ball!

Hole 4 - The fourth is the shortest, most mundane hole, a connector hole if you will.  Dead flat and just 38 yards, this is a birdie hole.  The house in the background was intimidating and the miss was usually short.  How I never broke a window, I have no idea!

Hole 5 - The longest hole, at 82 yards, this downhill left-to-righter required a soft touch to keep the ball between the barn and the driveway.  Playing off the roof of the barn was an option, though risky, as the ball could come up well-short or way-long.  To this day, my only hole-in-one in golf!

Hole 6 - The last hole was a tricky, uphill 75 yarder that crossed the road and the parking area/pond.  Anything that hit the road/parking area, no matter where it ended up, was considered in the hazard, requiring a drop.

Time is but the stream I go a-fishing in.

Quite the challenging tee shot right out of the gate.  I hope there were no windows on that side of the house.... :o

Ditto for not blading one on #4 as well.  ;)

I enjoy Drew's blog and this post particularly. Who here hasn't broken a window or nearly done so as a kid hitting wedges in their parents yard? We certainly didn't know firm and fast at our house back in the 80's but the high flop wedge from the rough was my spec-i-al-i-ty!

Kalen,

Only one window on the side of #1, and it was toward the front, not the back.  I routinely bladed balls into the house on #4, and with 3 of my parents' bedroom windows on the front of that section, it is a miracle from God I lived to tell about it!  I tended to play the most rounds when neither of them were home!  ;)

Eric,

As a lefty growing up in the 90's, I adored Phil Mickelson and his ability to hit the flop shot (still do).  I still consider myself a specialist and it is one of my go to shots around the green, though I don't know if I've ever pulled one off like he did at 15 at Augusta this year!

Very cool.

Quite an acute dogleg on #3. Are you able to hit ala Bubba a 90-degree, right-hand-turn hook over the trees?

Howard,

Despite sharing a dominant hand, I can't quite seem to match Bubba in his shot-making ability :(  I do tend to share his aggressiveness, it just never quite works out for me like that! :P

I would usually just throw it up over the top of the trees with a little draw and hope I got the distance right.  That area of woods is pretty dense, and there are many golf balls hit in there that were never found.  Depending on how many balls I had left, I would also occasionally lay up to the bottom of the hill (at the dogleg).
