Hey, all

I just thought I'd do a better job of introducing myself than I have previously, and ask a question that I've been wondering.

So, I am 25, living in Iowa, currently going to school on a golf scholarship. I am married, and am a life long golfer. I've never been skilled enough to make any sort of living from the game, but growing up, my grandfather and three uncles were club pros. My uncle Jim even caddied on the tour for a while.  It was my grandpa Jim who instilled in me a deep sense of appreciation for excellent golf courses. I love golf, and admire those of you who have designed and have an even deeper understanding of the game than I. I hope to learn well from you all while I'm here.

I've heard some playful chat around the site that this is the "Platinum" age of course design, and there be no doubt that some excellent courses have been built in the past 20 years. Most of you are all much broader traveled than I, and it just left me wondering: which courses have you played, built in the this "Platinum" age, that have left the most impact on you? In your own opinions, which are the best examples of modern course design excellence?

Welcome, Alex.

You've asked a big question, many approaches/threads devoted to it.  Here's one that may be a good start, it asks specifically about the best courses since 1995.

Welcome Alex.

As for influential modern courses, I suggest you read some of Ran's course profiles in courses by country.  The Iowa course that has received the highest praise is the Harvester between Marshalltown and Des Moines.  If you have not played it you should try and get there.

Welcome, any relation to Fidel?
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Sign of the times, perhaps: my first curiosity was about Alex's relation (or lack thereof) to PGA Tour player Roberto Castro, rather than Fidel.
