Anyone been to Bretton Woods Golf Club, Washington DC?
« on: April 30, 2012, 09:48:16 PM »
Hi guys,

I just can't find anything about Bretton Woods Golf Club in Washington DC on the internet. Do you have any information about it? What architect? Good? Doak index? It would be very helpful to have some information about it  for making my decission if I go there or not.

Thanks very much.

Angela,
I've played there a few times but not recently. The course is one of Ed Ault's efforts from the 1960s and doesn't seem to have been altered all that much. The course has the characteristics you'd expect in a 1960s era DC-area course. If you've played some of Ault's courses (e.g. NW Park, original Falls Road) you will be on familiar territory. I'd give it a 3 on the Doak scale.  It's a nice spot for a social outing but the golf isn't compelling. If you plan on going after some rainy days, the lower part of the course (it's on a slope that tilts towards the Potomac River) will likely be a bog.

Have you been to BWRC since they converted to bermuda fariways? They have also started progress on a master plan which includes upgrading green complexes, bunkers and tees. The initial group of holes has been completed and they are wonderful. The Super is also working on a project to improve drainage. You are correct with your comments about the course holding water. Fortunately the drainage issues are being addressed. The course is interested and challenging and offers a wonderful parkland setting. Not the best in the DC area but certainly worth a visit.

I last played Bretton Woods about 9 years ago and it was quite underwhelming:  the holes were pretty boring (many very very flat without any real interest) and the conditioning was terrible-- wet, slow, bad grass, etc.  The holes closest to the Potomac were the worst, since they were the wettest and flattest (and most bug infested).

I hadn't realized that they were undertaking the work described by Rob, which sounds great.  Since everyone I know who belongs is a non-golfer, I just assumed the club (which has a heavy World Bank/IMF membership) was fine with it the way it was.
