Amoeboid bunkers at Augusta
« on: March 21, 2012, 03:01:22 PM »

What happened? Page 124 in GOLF shows MacKenzie's drawing of the first green. The bunker style is what is popular with many on the site. Totally different look than today.

I think it's interesting that they've never removed the bunker in the 10th fairway.

It doesn't appear to have any other purpose than aesthetics...as far as I know, only one person has ever driven into it.

Now, I'm not suggesting it should be. I think the 10th hole is fine the way it is.... I just think it is interesting they've never taken that bunker out.

At this point, it's by far the most iconic thing about the 10th hole.

All of those lacy edges on the bunkers at Augusta were simply edged off over years, and no one's tried to put them back. Instead they've preserved/restored/emulated the shapes and sharp lips created by decades of edging. You also see a number of sand faces at Augusta where the original edge has been cut back so far that a weird, bulky shape in the bunker cavity has been created.

Of all the world's great courses, Augusta certainly has the worst looking bunkers. They really just look like bunkers that have lost their original character over the years; only difference is, they're filled with really expensive white sand! This phenomenon has occured at so many aged course, but it looks most bizarre at Augusta.

Per this thread - http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,51383.0.html - all of MacKenzie's jagged edges were removed around 1947 for ease of maintenance.
