What features and what hole will determine the winner
« on: March 29, 2012, 09:54:37 PM »
Sunday afternoon on the back nine at Augusta ?

While # 10 can be a difficult hole, producing bogies, historically, it hasn't seemed to be the killer or catalyst for determining the outcome.

The same could probably be said for # 14 and # 17.

So, will 11, 12, 13, 15, 16 or 18 be the critical hole on the final round ?

Will water hazards or the greens be the killer/catalyst.

If it's windy, do the water hazards get the nod ?

Looking back over the years, I think the shaved bank in front of #15 might be the most key feature.   Eagles and doubles, great hole.

Pat,
The three holes with the highest score through the years are #'s 10- ranked 1st, 11- 2nd, and 12- 3rd.
If those holes are parred it frees up a player to take more risk at 13 and 15.

Can you separate the water and the wind on 11 & 12?  ;D

Patrick,

I don't think it's the guys that drop the least shots on 10 or 11 or those that can gain the most shots on 13 and 15.  Most everyone is going to lose and gain on those holes.

I think the guy that smoothly get through holes 14, 17, and 18 will be tough to beat.  There's a strong collection of guys that had a chance to win on Sunday that dropped shots on 10 and 11 and gained them back on 13 and 15 but failed to stay smooth on the other par 4's.

So I think the key on the back nine on Sunday are the par 4's coming in other than 10 and 11.

15 is such a fine line between disaster or success with some luck thrown in.17 seems to bite  especially from behind the green, but the approach to 15 still seems most determinative.

it seems to me that birdie on 16 produces winners, quite often
