I'm a member at Columbus CC and have been fortunate to play most of the courses in the Columbus area. My personal choice would be Scioto. I don't remember much about The Golf Club, which is why I would probably choose Scioto.
Brian,
I had arranged a round at CCC last time I came home to Springfield but, for some reason, we ended up playing at my buddy's old club, Heritage. It is a PB Dye course that has some interest but on a very forgettable piece of property on the West side of town. I wanted to play CCC because I believe it was where my late father played his only US Open Local Qualifier (think he shot 75). Columbus is probably a bit like my favorite members' club Springfield CC, also a Ross, in it's design - isn't everything routed off of a large hill? Have you played Springfield?
I really enjoyed Scioto when I played there 16 years ago but found many of Wilson's changes to be more modern than classic.
Cheers
I haven't yet played Springfield, but it's on my list for this year. I've heard great things about it.
If you're in Columbus and want to play CCC, feel free to let me know.
Brian,
Would love to. Likewise with Springfield - a few of my high school buddies (including the who used to belong to Heritage and who still lives in Columbus) belong and my mother lives in a house my dad built off of the 6th hole. Also, my father also did two pen & inks of the clubhouse for the scorecard which I humbly think is one of the best scorecards I've seen.
The US Open Qualifier will be there Saturday I believe - this is the one added because the Columbus Qualifier on Monday is so loaded. Erik Compton qualified for Pebble a few years ago. I'll definitely be in touch as I my wife has given me permission to head home for a multiple-day golf excursion where we had hoped to play SCC a few times, head up to Urbana CC where Pete Dye's father build the original nine and Pete began greenkeeping in his mid-teens, and go down to Moraine. But, like I said, I had been pressing my friend to go to CCC so maybe we could make that work.
Cheers
PS - My boy is a big fan of Brookside which I thought was good but not great by any stretch. Thoughts?
