Bob, more in the old days, I'm sure.
I recall my first design - Brookstone near you in NW Atlanta. The 8th has a dogleg right with a slope left. My pro designer, Larry Nelson stood on the tee and only hits hooks. We wanted to leave a tree at about 180 out to suggest a cut, but he made sure that for guys like him, that the fw was wide enough to start his hook right inside the tree, and if hit properly, it had enough room to roll out.
To me, the perfect scenario on a long par 4 - if you shape the shot around the tree, you gain 20-30 yards. If you can only hit a hook, you can find the fw, but you have a much longer approach shot. It suggests, but doesn't demand a high fade, but it does give a certain shot type an advantage.
