   ??? ???

Kyle, I'm interested in the basis for your "misconstrued strategic value " opine re: Galloway ????

Pat , the green heads can be quite nasty indeed !  But they don't bite true believers lol!

Archie,

You're right.

The "true believer" I was playing with didn't get bitten, they just carried him away with the intention of dining on him later that day  ;D

 ;D ;) 8)

We had an Atlantic Winter League event at our club today and I took the liberty to poll some of the  players as to the best golf course down here.  The first six said Galloway , the seventh said twisted dune  (looking for a free beer  no doubt   ) , and the next three said Galloway, Galloway , and Galloway .  They almost to a man said there is Galloway and then there are the rest. Realize these are good to excellent players , including local PGA professionals . Some did qualify that it is too difficult , and slow paced to play for everyday play...but for one round it was their pick !

I played Shore Gate probably 5 times and those plays were before my current interest in architecture.  I remember back then asking what the point is in having a bunker carved out of the side of a mound that upon close inspection is only a face of a bunker with no floor.  They were just for show, something to grab your eye as you look from the tee.  I think it is a par four dogleg right with these small sand faces along the outside of the dogleg.  I had no clear interest in architecture but I was sure there was no valid reason to construct a bunker just for show.

All, thinking out loud, but are we comparing apples and oranges here?  The Southern shore area-let's say, (I, as a transplanted Northern New Jerseyan to South Jersey) from basically southern LBI area down to Cape May (and I will include Sea Oaks and Atlantis in there) is roughly 58 miles (Sea Oaks is off Exit 58 on the GSP, Cape May is 0).  This is a big area.  And, I'm not so sure it's a great exercise doing this.  Seaview Bay, ACCC, Linwood, and Galloway are right on the water-right on the Bay.  Brigantine's on an island.  Most of the other ones aren't, they're at least a mile or so inland.

There was a quote I read once, when I was still in Club Management, and it was words to the effect of "If you like a wine, it is good".

Sorry I missed this discussion last week. Twisted Dune is very very good - played it 3 x over 2 years trips to the area and it was by far the best course we saw. Hidden Creek is a very special place which given the pedigree, it deserves all of the accolades.

Was very disappointed in Sand Barrens - seemed like nothing very special and memorable.

Surprised no one mentioned Rentault - I really liked it - greens are fun options off the tee some good land movement - very enjoyable.

What?! I'm stunned the GCA didn't like the methane-vent "lighthouse" at Mccullough's Emerald Golf Links! I wish I could find a picture.

I second the mention of Vineyard at Renault Winery(Shearon) as one of the better publics in SJ.

I haven't played Renault in several years, but when I played it last the greens were firm bordering on runway. Now it may have grown in a little bit since then, but I'm still biased against the course on account of the heinous-looking Tuscan villa next to the course and because the wine is well...umm...I'm not a wine snob...but I prefer Franzia out of a box.

Renault is a good course, although I thought it was short.  I did think the greens were good, rolled superbly.  I would like to play Galloway so I may form an opinion, my only experience there was volunteering for the Open qualifier in I think '09.
From my experience, Atlantic City seems to be preference. But still, it's a different feel-Renault is more inland, as is Sea Oaks, closer to, say BHP, whereas ACCC, Seaview Bay, Galloway, Linwood, Wildwood are all on similar terrain.  Greate Bay and Pines are kind of similar terrain as well.  TD is more 'inland' than McCulloughs.   But in all, it works.  We have a lot of good golf down here.  We should have such problems to be able to have to rank them.
