The Best Finish in Golf

Inspired by our PGA Tour Stop this week and the infamous "Bear Trap", what course(s) do you think has the best finish in golf? 

Let's try to stay focussed in on holes 16, 17, & 18.

Sand Hills 5-3-4 finish.  Long downhill par-5, short testy par-3, long uphill par-4.

Other than the "Bear Trap" the only other course that I have heard boasting of a great "Finish" is Canterbury Golf Club in Cleveland, OH.  Having played it several times and will say it is a doozy.  A Par 5 (617)- Par 3(229) Par 4 (439 uphill) finish.

Similarities between Sawgrass, Sand Hills and Shinnecock?

1 birdie-able par-5.

1 short par-3.

1 difficult par-4 (18 in all cases).

Does this mean anything?

Sawgrass is up there, I'll add Victoria National to the mix as well. Wish #17 and 18 werent rather similar, but 14-16 are incredible.

How about Bay Hill? Is 16 still playing as a 5, I know they played it as a 4 for a few years.

Old Macdonald:  16-Alps, 17-solid par 5, 18-Punchbowl - 2 of my favorite holes on the course in the last 3.

Underrated - Forest Dunes:  16-long par 3 over sandy waste area, 17-good driveable par 4, 18 - good par 5 that narrows the longer the hole plays

Yes, #16 is playing as a very short par 5. Palmer's team recently re-did the green complex among other changes on the course.

That's an interesting finish, short par 5, tough par 3, and tough par 4.

Thinking on it, Notts has a very good finish.

Wallasey too has a terrific finish.

Hunstanton's is excellent.

In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

We finally found a "best" question to which "Pine Valley" isn't the answer!

I'm going with a shortlist of:

Royal Melbourne (West) -- three fantastic, demanding holes, calling for a variety of shots off tees and into greens.
Royal Cinque Ports -- short, tempting and great greens x2, then a long, strong, strategic four.
Golspie -- for lovers of quirk and a hint of golf porn.
St Enodoc -- great linksland, demanding but not overpowering.
National Golf Links -- great mix of temptation and looming disaster, especially at 17 and 18.

I like Ganton for drama on the 16th and 17th - perhaps a little weak for 18 (but you can rack up a big score if you get greedy).

A thread on which Carnoustie clearly deserves a mention, though it may be too tough.  Another good 3, 5, 4 finish is at Silloth.  Deal is a good shout.  Ganton's 18th, as Giles suggests, may just let down the cracking 16th and 17th.  I liked the 18th at CPC far more than I expected with the press it gets, so I'd suggest CPC has a place in the conversation.  Pasatiempo's last 3 beat me up badly but I recall them being a good set of holes.

My winner is still Muirfield, though.

no arguments here on Muirfield, thats my winner.

Of the other headliners I love the finish at the Old Course, CPC and NGLA. 

Without wanting to thread jack, having been fortunate enough to play Streamsong Blue I can tell you that the finish there is really good.  I wouldn't go as far to say 'best in golf' but the combo of long uphill par 3, very good par 5 and solid 4 is certainly used to good effect.

16 on the Red course looked great too!
